cherokee jeep and towing?

hi folks i'm looking to buy a 2005 2.8 diesel cherokee jeep and wondered who tows with one and what the fuel consumption is like???

don't want to buy it if its not right

I do - proper 4WD and has something like a 3.3 MTB which means it will tow big nags and a decent trailer. Mine tows middleweight 16.2 in an Ascot up horrendous hills with no problem. It was also rated as a "proper" 4wd when I looked around. Very reliable as it is "old" technology. Only caveat is that I do not have Jeep service mine as they are horrendously expensive. I can't comment on the diesel because I dont know what the comparsion is against others. It has also proved to be a complete god send in this weather and I have still been able to get around where others vehicles just could not.
 
I tow an IW 510 with mine (53 plate 2.8 diesel auto), tows really well, does about 22mpg with the trailer on the back.
 
If its the same, I own a petrol P reg Grand Cherokee Jeep and only use it to tow and in the snow! Its fantastic (but fuel economy on the petrol is something like 18 mpg when towing eekkk hence only using it to tow!). I pull a 16.1hh in a Ifor Williams 505 and it doesnt bat an eyelid. Has been incredibly reliable and a real workhorse. My OH also used it for a bit of off roading and it ate the Landies up!
 
Depends what your normal jurney is. I do an 18 mile commute each way between home & work with quite a bit of traffic/ stop start type driving so get about 25mpg. If I do a longer journey on motorway I get about 30 to 32mpg. being an auto makes mine a bit thirstier but it's really nice and easy to drive.
 
i have been looking at the new ford kuga, it does 44mpg and has a break towing weight of 2100kg, its also got ncap 5 star safty rating, iv also heared that the izuzu jeeps are good on diesel, but dont get good ncap safty record rating, ford rangers excellent to tow, but not good mpg, L200 rubbish lots of engine problems, nissan nivarna brill but heavy on diesel
 
my husband has the new kuga....we tow 2 16hh in it no problem, altho haven't done any difficult terrain, really nice car

thats a bit over zealous, about 34mpg......obviously less when towing....his is an all wheel drive diesel...very easy to drive....lighter than my mini!

i'd have 1 but i can't afford it

oooh i really like the sound of them will have to go and test drive one, i can not afford one either but hey you only live once
 
I towed with virtually the same car. I got about 23mpg at best when towing one 16.1 in a IW505. But it was incredibly good at towing and wonderful off road. Never got stuck at all even where everything else did. Combined non-towing driving I got no better than 27mpg and only occasionally 30mpg when on a quiet motorway. I sold it to get a 3.5 tonne box because the latter would have better fuel consumption and more space.
 
I love my jeep- it goes through everything (especially satisfying in the recent weather)! Including towing my trailer through a muddy field everyday last year at ponyclub camp when everyone else was getting stuck. My average is about 27mpg but i have done a lot of towing with 2 horses recently and my commute is fairly stop start. The only thing is that mine struggles on motorways if ur about on the speedlimit and theres a slight incline but I do it so infrequently it makes no odds really.

But be careful of the legal towing weights --- FACT: the auto can pull more than the manual, so don't assume both the same or else you could possibly be breaking the law/not insured simply because of the gearbox!! (Presume it must be the weight of vehicle difference??) Don't quote me on this but I think the auto is 3200kg and the manual 2600kg - ish

So be truthful what maximum weight you will be pulling -- ie. someone posted earlier about the Ford legally towing 2100kg. Would 2 x 16hh horses plus the trailer really be under that weight?? Possibly with a lightweight trailer?? I'm not convinced.

Also a little niggle in the law that most people don't realise -- if you are pulled over it is not the weight that you are carrying that day, even if within the legal braked weight of the towing vehicle, but the maximum weight the TRAILER is legally allowed to carry plus the trailer. As in if it can carry it, you legally have to be able to pull it, so no point saying I only ever carry one horse

So back to the jeep -- love it!! The auto gives a lovely smooth ride for the horses, plenty of power up the steepest of hills. 25ish miles to the gallon towing, 40ish everyday.
 
We sold our 2005 Jeep Cherokee last year and bought a 2008 model.
The old one (manual) was loads better on fuel than the new one (auto)though it hasn't had much of a trial with the horse box on yet.
We used to get 34mpg without the trailer and about 28mpg with. Engine was cream crackered when we sold it though!!
 
those figures are better....the one i've seen has got 33k miles and came from london....basically a chelsea tractor....got all the gizmos...very nice, just the fuel consumption that was worrying me!
 
I have the 2.5 diesel version (bit older than 2005), it does about 23mpg towing 2 horses and 25 with just one. On the motorway it will just about do 50mpg if you stick to just under 50mph and its not got a headwind

Don't test drive one unless you are prepared to have a significantly reduced bank balance though as once you have driven one you will want to buy one!!
 
Me and my partner have been also looking at buying a Grand cherokee after lots of research we steered away from the diesil models as they genrally suffer from head problems! and are a fortune to fix. We then looked @ V8 models and relized the fuel consumption would be just far to expensive and have test driven the 4.0litre model and am over the moon with it. does anyone here have the 4.0litre model?what do you think of it?

I have 3.7 it only does about 13mpg without towing.

However I run it on lpg which is half the price of petrol. I tow a ifor williams 506 and have had no problems at all. Love mine, been great in the snow.

lol exactly what I do with mine! The 4 L petrol can tow 3500kgs but I don't think the diesel can tow as much as that, I might be wrong tho!
 
I have an M reg 4 litre petrol auto cherokee and it tows 2 16.2s in a 510 beautifully. The auto provides a smoother ride for the trailer. It can tow 4 tons - but you'd have to weight the car up similarly otherwise you may get tail wagging dog. Super, solid car with a simple engine. We've had it in family since new and can't bear to part with it. It also harrows school and about 20 acres of fields in comfort - a proper workhorse.
 
Well, hope you are not talking metric tonnes. It is illegal to tow anything over 3500kgs/3.5 tonnes - with a 'car'/4x4 - in this country, weighting the car or not
