The chestnut post in the PG got me thinking about my pony Max, he is a welsh c/d and a chestnut, BUT his mane isn't flaxen nor chestnut it's almost a ashy browny colour and his tale is white with a brown stripe, now there is roaning in on his dams side, so could that be why?? Sorry for the completely odd question, but I have always wondered what it was called, or why he has it etc etc??

heres some pics.

Best one of his tale I have,

I think the welsh breeds produce unique colours! My girl is a dark chestnut (definitely not liver though) and when I bought her, her mane and tail were so obviously black, the vet mistook her for a bay. The following season though her mane went much more like her body colour. Her tail remains darker than her body colour, but also has silver and gold strands in it. And her feathers are very blonde. Her winter and summer coats are very different colours too.

My dark chestnut Welsh D x has same colour mane and tail as your horse's mane. It has lots of black, white and brown hairs which together look silver. My mare also has the white chin. Unfortunately I don't know her breeding but I have seen other Welsh which have lots of different colours in their manes and tails. I think it look very striking and unusual.

Your horse is lovely and hopefully a colour expert will post an answer for you as mine is a pretty pointless post :D :o
