Ok, so loads of people I've know that are equine have always had opinions on chestnut mares that they are stubborn and moody, but worse than any other mare. I know its a matter of opinion. I have a 2 year old chestnut sec D mare/filly and at first she was a handful, but then she started to come round and trust me, so I was starting to stick up for chestnuts when people expressed their opinion.

However! This morning she was the worst she has ever been! The herd now have both sides of the field open to graze in, so lots and lots of new grass! I went to get her, she happily walked until she couldn't see any more horses, then she decided she would continuously shove me and try spin to get back to them. This went on for a while, in the end there was a very moody mare that took 2 of us to get her in! She then plodded up to the stables looking as unhappy as possible, and would not stop fidgeting when she was in, she didn't even enjoy her groom which she usually does. All she wanted was to be back in the field!

Anyone have any stories to share on their chestnut mares?!

Well our secb chestnut ..white socks to complete the package:D..........thinks shes the leader of all of them...turn her out in the morning and she shouts and head tosses at them all, runs along the adjoining fences doing a lovely extended trot........making sure everyone takes notice .If you have an argument with her ..........it could be her shouting at the gate for hay ........and then ignore her.she,ll bronc on the spot and squeal...has proper hissy fits..her stable door is by the kitchen window and as soon as she sees you in the morning shell shout and keep shouting till you go out...........theres loads she does, she loves to buck when ridden usually with excitement, she has a superb jump and fab paces shes ACE !!!!

Wildflower she sounds amazing, I love chestnut mares :D I had one very similar to yours, I loved her to bits....always full of drama and so expressive. One day I got home from work and she had rounded all her fieldmates into the sand menage after the gate had blown open, she was standing proudly grazing in the gateway not letting any of them come out and share her grass, and she also often used to guard the water trough too, only letting the others drink when she felt like it :)

I took her in the Family horse class at a show once to get her used to the atmosphere and came home with a black eye :D She was such a character and made me smile everyday :) I bought her when she was 10 and was lucky enough to own her for 20 years.

My OH's chesnut mare was particularly "diva-ish" this morning. She's only 5 but is normally quite sane and polite. OH was working so I rode her, luckily her diva tendancies didn't last long! Oh and she has no white socks! :p

I've had a taste of chestnut yesterday. Had my mare 2 months now and she has been perfect. Took her for a 'quick' hack yesterday and it was a fight down the whole lane. I tried being patient, then angry and it literally took us an hour to do what normally takes 5 minutes! Nappy was not the word she seriously had a bee in her bonnet. We were doing so well together too so feel like I've gone back a few steps with her now :(

I have a six year old chetnut mare with four whites...

and she's the biggest diva of a mare I've met in my entire life/

Well you should all have bought chestnut geldings, our old boy was a total star, 16 3 and novice kids loved to ride him, you could tack him up, go for a three course meal, come back and he would still be standing where you left him, even during the colic attack that killed him he stood for the vet to inject a painkiller, he had his moments, loved cantering across the moors and always tried to bite me while grooming or tacking up, he is still sorely missed

Will someone tell Foxy she's a chestnut mare, she didn't get the memo :(
Her biggest diva demand is following me around the field looking like a lost puppy and everytime I turn to look at her she lifts her left leg to "say please" for a polo mint.

I made the mistake of buying a mainly chesnut Appy mare, who has both arab and tb in her breeding, oh and she has four white feet! We can have weeks of almost perfect behaviour and then she decides to Diva, usually at RC events, where she can have the biggest audience for her divaish behaviour. She was brilliant at her breed show, but has been the worlds biggest PIA since, she has been spooky, nappy and has even managed to break her bridle since then!, wouldn't swap her for the world though :D I am hoping to take her to our fun show tomorrow, but will have to test what mood she is in before we go!

love my sec d chestnut mare ! :) absolute character, challenges me at every hurdle but wouldn't have her any other way. lovely little fire cracker

Its only since we aquired another two neddies (sec d,s )..that I realise what a handful our little ginger nut secb is.Cannot believe how easy these 2 sec ds are , :).........really genuine honest and easy to handle....its taken years to get to fully know our chestnut mare , eg ....when she gets off the box if you let her eat a little bit of grass and have her own way shes fine and will happily plod into her stable, if you tug and tell her no come with me now she,ll jog , try to shove and nip:mad:..........however she is incredibly intelligent and quick to learn, our instructor rode her yesterday and could,nt belive how responsive she is to your leg......and quick to learn, shoulder in and passage yesterday..and we did a pirouette too.We could never sell her ..shes not a kids pony at all, she knows the word "canter"..so we have to use a code word and slip your leg back a little and shes off in a gallop and likes to buck while she does it too!...I would love another like her for all her red headed quirks shes one in a million:o
