Been posting about loaning thanks for all your comments, i've seen one advertised quite locally which is as title says a chestnut mare, she has completed BSJA british novice and county level riding horse. normally i would not look at a mare let alone a chestnut one, but someone knows her and said she was levelheaded, given that it seems quite hard to find a suitable loan horse would she be worth a look ?

I hope to agree something like a months trial (for both sides) so if i did not get on with her its not like buying the wrong one and being stuck is it?

Also seen another one but its older than i thought about, but again its not like its mine forever.

Ooh its harder than looking to buy!!!
 
they do have a stigma attatched to them,bless,go have a look there is no harm,but dont get her because she is the only one about atm
there will be plenty coming up,i only wanted a gelding and there was loads of mares up for loan but i waited and found one very close to me,so keep looking at the same time,dont give up when the first one comes along
 
sorry, but this myth about chesnut mares really annoys me. I have had three chestnut mares and they are the three best horses I've had. My current chesnut TB mare is good as gold, never mareish and never bad tempered. She is really lovely and I hate it when people make comments - even had vet/farrier/back woman saying 'uh oh a chestnut mare;.

So my point is - of course go see her - she may well be your dream horse!
 
I love chestnut mares and never have seen a bad one, I have a chestnut TB mare and she is as soft as butter , not a nasty bone in her
 
I would so agree with Mialottzo and Teabiscuit. I have had 2 chestnut mares and they were both fantastic (one of them I think really was my horse of a lifetime). Just as you get 'good' bays and 'bad' bays you will get the same with chestnuts, but I actively look for them when I am buying a horse!
 
Chesnut mares are the best-look at lil brit!
I think the chestnut mare myth is brilliant-more for me to buy!

Honestly bit like judging a book by its cover.

Ive had mine for 6yrs and would buy chestnut mares from now on. Def a fun challenge to be had!
 
I put a post about Chestnut mares not that long ago, if you do a search you'll probably find it.
My last horse was a chestnut mare and she was lovely, no grumpier than my bay gelding thats for sure.
Go try her and make up your own mind.
A friend was really put off a chestnut mare by our YO and it's a shame as she was such a sweet horse
 
Who was it that said there is no horse is a bad colour or somthing like that. at the end of the day does the colour make that much difference to capability and or potential

I thought the whole thing too about chestnut mares and then ended up with one..... she is no worse than my bay gelding in attitude, infact thinking about it is is more loving and willing than he is and will probably go further
 
I have had several chestnut mares, nothing wrong with any of them.

I think (someone will correct me I'm sure) the myth came about because it was believed that chestnuts had thinner skin and were therefore more sensitive. Sounds a bit far fetched to me. Perhaps someone just had a really tetchy mare and she happened to be chestnut !

Go and see this horse.

I am also anti-chestnuts (and Im more a gelding type)! But if you've heard she's fine then you might as well go and have a look. If she turns into a nutter then you can always take her back!

You do of course get good chestnut mares out there.....!
 
I've ridden loads of chestnut mares and they're no different from any other horse. I own three mares at the moment...and they're no bother...I don't even know when they're in season.
It's all a myth - go for it!

When I bought my chestnut mare I couldnt believe I had done it as previous to this I only considered bays!! I just liked bays! She is the kindest horse I have ever owned and yes she has had problems but these are nothing to do with her colour or sex! Despite these probs I have never regretted buying her as she is the sweetest horse you could ever want! And a stunning colour!

As to mares, having had geldings and mares I dont think I will ever buy a gelding again. Much prefer mares as they seem much easier in the herd situation. But perhaps that is because Ive never had a bad one!

But I also dont compete at high levels and I do it for fun!

Dont let it put you off if you have a good trial period!
 
I have a chestnut mare & she is better behaved then a bay gelding, a black mare, a bay mare, the list is endless. My other 2 mares were chestnut & had the nicest temperments. I wish people would stop being so colour blind & listening to age old myths that have long been disputed & corrected.

(i'd been riding him for 18 months previously at the RS), my next bay gelding ended up with the nickname psycho!

(He was very lovable but definitely the horse worlds version of a schizophrenic!)

I tend to avoid bay gelding now!
