Depending on what shape they're in you can very gently pull them off - don't yank all at once but gently work them off, and not too near the skin.
Chestnuts are just vestigial toes from millions of years ago (horses are effectively running around on their middle fingers - the chestnut is, if I recall correctly, their 'thumb').
