Chestnuts....

My boys are getting rather large and look like one of them has split in the middle, can I get rid / minimise and if so, how?

Razor blade! My horse's chestnut fell off in my hand yesterday. I know they are supposed to shed naturally but it still gave me the willies a bit!

Yes, they do come off naturally, but ask your farrier, he'll be able to remove them/cut them down. You can do it your self, but I wouldn't as if you cut too short, it can bleed!!

I put a little bit of oil on them and then the next day they are lovely and soft and you can pick them off no trouble.

You can soften it with vasoline and then gently pull it away when it shows signs of seperating OR, you can ask your blacksmith to cut it away. Dont try to pull it away with force or you could end up with a bloody mess that will attract flies and co (plus it hurts
