My friend has a 7 year old dog who has recently started chewing/destroying zips! It was suggested to friend that this could be because he is deficiant in something, does anyone know anything about this?
He has never been a chewer before so it is unusual- thoughts?

I've no idea

. But it took me back thirty years to when I had a dog that did this. At £10-£15 (then!) to replace a zip it was an expensive and annoying habit. Sew up/velcro cushion covers, and keep any jackets out of reach

Isn't this sort of habit called pica?? Sometimes horses lick metal objects as a symptom they are missing a vitamin or mineral- do dogs do the same??... perhaps evaluate his feed and check he gets a balanced diet??

Yes, I think that is what my friend read too, she is going to take him to the vet. I think she was quite happy to overlook it when he was chewing her mums stuff but when he got his paws on her leather jacket she wasn't so impressed!
