I was hoping for some honest pro's and con's for getting a Chihuahua.

My daughter has wanted one for a couple of years, but it's only now that I consider her old enough to be responsible to care for her own dog.

We currently have seven dogs, five are working springers, one Rottweiler and a Cane Corso - they all live indoors.

I have read the breed standard and characteristics and I know a couple of people that have had one. Am I right in thinking that they are either ******* or angels?

What I would really like to know is whether they would fit in with so many other dogs and whether they would boss the others around?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Chi's are great!!!! However, I personally would not get one for me as they aren't a practical yard dog. Too small and dainty and would get hurt considerably if a horse squished his foot! Too small to keep up on a hack too. The one I look after often has to be left in the crate when the horse is on the yard or I go out riding. He does run around and help poo pick with my other dogs though!!!!

Great characters- nervous and noisy to start with when introduced to new dogs etc but soon become boss :) Great lap dogs and companions too! Fabulous characters!!! I love them, just not practical to own one for me.

The trouble we have found (with our frequent visitor chi) is that other big dogs find them soooooo interesting because of their size and if the chi is super nervous, could bolt if chased or feels threatened.

Good luck whatever you decide to get!

I have a chi and think theyre fantastic dogs. Mine has endless amounts of energy and is more like a terrier - likes chasing mice/phesants/birds/rabbits etc etc and normally catches them which is always interesting! We are in an agility team which he loves doing and is one of the best on the small dog team even though we have only done it for 3 months. We also have our silver good citizen award after 7 months - he is very easy to train and loves to please.

He was a rescue and before i had him had never been outside or socialised at all but took to it all fantastically.

He is no handbag dog though!

Thank you for your replies.

They wouldn't be my choice of breed, but i can see their appeal!

Your experiences sounds very positive, I will approach the subject with my husband!

What ever you do dont treat it as a handbag dog. Walk them normally etc. I know one that was picked up all the time as a puppy and now refuses to walk and hides when the lead comes out. He's quite snappy and unconfident, scared of everything

I rather like them and staffords are my breed of choice. The ones I know are just treated as ordinary dogs and are rather terrier like in my experience. ...bags of character and energetic. The one proviso is that being small, they are also a little more fragile so bear that in mind particularly with your high energy springers !

It would definitely need to be treated the same as our other dogs! It would need to come shooting as well I expect, though obviously not to work. Once matured and fit would they be able to go all day?

It's a good point about the possibility of squishing, though my springers aren't bouncy, more likely to be sat on by the Cane Corso!

I am actually more worried about the Chihuahua beating up my other dogs and being super yappy.
