No pics as I haven't figured out how to post them but my tiny Chihuahua, Mia, has started to come down to the orchard every evening with whoever is putting the birds away so that she can help round them up. I've not encouraged it but she whines if I don't let her help so I just let her get on with it. She is very good at rounding up both the ducks and the geese but the bigger chickens give her a peck if she throws her weight around too much with them and since they are bigger than her, she treats them with respect.

She's my first Chi so I'm just wondering if this is normal behaviour? I've had whippets all my life (still have one actually) but they have never been allowed near my birds and have never shown any interest in them. My friends have started asking if I'm going to start gun dog training with her but I doubt she could carry anything heavier than a single feather so probably not!!
 
Completely normal - mine tries to round up the cows but they just peer down on him thinking "what are you?!"

I personally think as long as they're not treated like babies they're a good trainable breed. My little chi is great at agility with a few rosettes under his belt and many fastest times, has his gold kennel club award, will retrieve (only mini unstuffed toy ducks) and bring back to me dropping it on my feet. But does bring in pigeons(?!), birds, and mice into the house!

I bet thats so funny to see!

I have a whippet who wants to be a gun dog. He loves retrieving, in fact I'd say he was obsessed with it. Happily swims out into the lake to retrieve. My other one just watches horrified :lol:
 
My OH used to use our dobie when he was training gundogs. She loves to jump into the lake and retrieve. I also have a sheep staffy. He rounds them up a treat. He has a few "collie like" traits!! He's obviously in the wrong body!
 
Loved your post,I've had 2 chis,great little dogs.I too hope you get a pic of this.One of mine used to come with me to military bases when I took ccf cadets away on training,with the school.She sailed,she travelled on overnight hikes( often in my rucksack) ,a great little dog if you let them be dogs.

My neighbour has a "Cockerpoo(!)" which loves to help to collect their poultry every evening. She also helps to take the horses' rugs off on dry mornings by carrying the surcingles along behind neighbour as she is taking the rugs across the fields.

Our Rottweilers love to watch the dishmop running around in the neighbour's field, lol!
