Last year when it snowed I suffered with quite severe chilblains on the top of my thighs. Although I currently wear a pair of thermal long johns, fleecy jog bottoms and water proofs on top for work I have got chilblains again!!!

Off to the chemist on Monday to see if they do some sort of cream!!

Get Balmosa cream - thats the proper chilblain stuff, or use neat TCP - stings like hell but takes the itch and the fire out of them.
I look like I have leprosy, my legs are scared from the vile ones Ive had over the years, and I too wear more thin fleecy layers on my bottom than my top!
You have my sympathy! x

Balmosa, do I get that from the chemist? TCP sounds too painful!! My thighs never really cleared up from last year, the tops stayed a purply sort of colour!

Rosehip, do you still get chilblains? Have you managed to find out what helps clothing wise? x

I have got them on my toes :( but i have Raynaud's aswell so its to be expected- im not meant for the cold horsey life! ;) but i have been reccomended buying heated clothing- it has a battery pack and conducting fibres that conduct the heat around the body, you can get socks, shoes, gloves, body warmers etc- worth a look if youre suffering the cold a lot.

I hate them! I get them on my toes! I've got a stick of stuff called Snowfire - you get it from the chemist, it stinks but it's really good, takes the itch away & does help clear them up.

Uughj, horrible things, I've got them on my toes. I got really cold feet the other day when I was grazing my old mare in hand to reintroduce her to grass. All fine until I sat in front of the fire and then they zinged like crazy all evening :(

my fingers are covered in them, i have chilblain agony annually from october till april, but then i am a reynaud's sufferer too. I use balmosa by the bucket load. gives a burning feeling but SOOOO much better than the chilblain pain. my toes are also scarred from all the chilblains i had on them as a child. GAAAAAAAAH who turned the heater off!! my fingers swell too so are not a right lot of use in the winter. Have also tried tablets from GP, but first lot made me faint & new lot make me fall over, so not much good either. but thats due to me having low blood pressure i think so could be worth a trip to see mr gp?

I believe Chilblains occur when the water in the fat cells starts to freeze, hence the tendency to get them on the thighs. So warm clothing is essential.
They itch when they are defrosting and can cause long term bruising (i got them back in 2001 and when its really cold can still feel them now.
Calendula cream works extremely well to stop the itching and is widely available and cheap

Some years ago I had awful chillblains on my feet and thighs, worst I've ever had. I was trotting up a lame horse for the vet who thought it was funny that I was lamer than the horse! He told me to take double the daily dose of vitamin c for a week then single dose for the rest of the winter. I swear in two weeks they were healing up and I have never had them since.

I had a chillblain a winter ago on my thigh. First ever and it has left a scar. I too am suffering with my toes and hands at the moment with the cold. I also have Raynauds, so again like other sufferers who have horses it is hard in winter trying to keep the right level of warmth and dryness when you have buckets to fill and water troughs etc to de-ice.
My sympathies goes to anyone who suffers with the cold at this time of year :(

I have chilblains again this year too....I am itching like mad and trying desperately not to scratch it!! Went to GP with them two years ago as had never had them before!!! He was horrified and had no idea what they were he said "bloody hell" when I showed him them....didn't exactly fill me with confidence!!

Have been told that a mixture of friars balsam and iodine is supposed to do the trick.....so am going to try that and will keep you posted!! Xxx:)

Snowfire ointment, as someone else said, stinks like hell but works a treat, i get them on the top of my outer thighs, dosen't matter what i wear, even ski trousers and a long coat doesn't keep my thighs warm but the Snowfire really has worked this yr to calm them and these ones haven't left scars this time.

I have chillblains on my hands for the first time this year as well as my feet which is fairly normal. Any advice on the hands would be good! Can't believe it as it's not been a cold winter compared to last year.....

Hi juliette,

I have found that fingerless woolly gloves (rather fagan-esque I know!!!!) but they seem to keep the hands warm without interfering with work!!! Xx

On the other chilblaine front the mixture of friars balsam and iodine works a treat on the ones on my thighs!! So so so much less itchy. Xx

I get them too! :(
Hideous raised big blotchy patches in red and or purple! Itch like mad! Really bad on my thighs and my little toes. Absolutely horrible. I've got the balmosa cream but don't find it THAT amazing, although it does stop the itching. I've started wearing some sort of sports wear under my tights and breeches and that has stopped my thighs getting cold and the chilblains flaring up!

Hi, I first got them on my thighs 2 winters ago, when I was bringing Topaz back into work after her suspensory, was doing lots of walking in very cold weather.
I didn't know what they were at first, thought them were insect bites! ;)
Thought we had bed bugs, then decided I was going to disinfect the stables incase there was something in the bedding.... Mentioned it to the vets receptionist and she said they sounded like chilblains. Hallelujah!
I now wear icebreaker merino wool leggings under my breeches all winter, plus over trousers for yard work when it's really cold. Not had a problem since, except a few weeks ago, when I got cold and wet, i should have got changed when I got home but I didn't.....
Tried the cream, but didn't think it did much, but by that time I did have a line of them down each thigh......

I am the only one in my family that gets them. (although I am the one that spends a significant amount of time outside). My husband cant understand it. I am pleased, (sorry) to know there are more people that get them, because it makes me feel really week. I did not realize how many people suffered from it. Some good tips on here!

I've just welcomed the arrival of my first 2 chilblains of the season this week :D - I only get them on my toes and find the snowfire stuff does the job but will have a look for that Balmrosa cream.
