I'm suffering terribly from chilblains this year, (on my thighs, not feet for some reason). They say that Feb is going to be very cold too so i wondered if anyone can recommend some warm, waterproof over trousers that can be ridden in and that arnt too thick so working in the yard isnt too difficult. I am out all day at the yard mucking out and riding so they need to be quality and not too flappy!

Am I asking too much?? Many thanks.

Do you wear thermal long johns? I live in mine all winter, removing them occasionally for a wash! Jeans are a bit tight with them on underneath, so I bought a couple of pairs of stretch jeans in a size bigger than I usually take second hand off ebay. Warm as toast!

defo make sure you wear long johns.

also make sure you have slightly baggy breeches. they are not the most flattering but really tight breeches doesn't help at all.

i am currently sporting them on some of my fingers- very attractive!

but i muck out and ride in them and they are sooooo snug.
they were £20 i think or there about from my tack shop. deffo worth it.
good luck,

Only people who have had a chilblain can understand the appalling irritation, I so sympathise. Maybe some long johns? I have a silk pair which I wear under breeches then over trousers - my over trousers are elderly but Toggi's if that helps. Can you take some medication, there used to be pills?

I get them on the sides of my hips, as I wear full chaps all winter and this is the only part they don't cover! When it got really cold I started wearing tights as well as jods and full chaps (fleece lined) and these made the chillblains go away. I stopped wearing then when it got a bit warmer but now chillblains have come back so think I'll have to wear them again! I work at a yard and ride alot in all these layers and rarely get too warm so you should be fine.

I nearly managed all winter to avoid them this year, I have some Derby house over trousers, they are very warm but are wearing in the crutch (second year of wearing them).
But out hunting on Tues wearing tights, thermals and jods I got one on my right thigh

Poor you, I totally sympathise as I get them on my thighs and my cheeks. I can echo what a lot of the advise is on here because for the first winter in years I have started wearing long johns under jeans and (touch wood) my thighs are chillblain free this winter - yippee!

I have some thermal jods I wear when I need to wear jods and they seem ok, but the miracle cure has been layering I think, although I have never ridden in jeans before I now do just about everything with thermals under a pair of stretch jeans and it really does work. I have also taken to moisturising my body every day as my doc said that chillblains love dehydrated skin, and the cold weather followed by central heating does dry the skin out.

Yep join the club i have them on both thighs ! after getting in the bath is the worst !!
I wear long johns and jogging bottoms or something similar i find jeans and jods dont help the situation. Try some ski trousers i wear mine all the time. T k Max have a good selection !

I have them on my thighs too....I completely sympathise!!!

I'm wearing thermal leggings under everything and salopettes when I can, and full chaps for riding.

I have them really badly at the moment in my toes- they are driving me to distraction.

Mine started when i was getting wet feet, after about my 12th pair of boots during 2009 - I have just brought a pair of shooting boots - a fraction of the price I had been paying(the waterproof, leather outer, but gortex inners were only £79 and my feet were the warmest and dryest they have been for months.) Must admit I have been really really dissapointed with the quality of the "horse" boots on the market at the moment - everything from Joules, to muckers, to hunters to mountain horse have leaked within a week or so.

Another vote for Deep Heat, Thermal L-J's and Toggi over trousers! If I'm wearing looser trousers I wear the L-J's if I'm wearing jeans, I wear the over trousers!

a pair of thermal or silk long johns and a pair of ROHAN winter bags (next size up) the rohan w bags guarantee to -15! wash well dry quick! inner seams do rub (notyour legs just the trousers!)if riding a lot. have been a life saver for me! but if you dont want to invest in winter bags(£60) lots of layers loose (very loose) nothing clingy def not jodphurs and def not jeans! waterproof, windpfroof and breathable and loose fit!!!!!!!!!!! old wives solution to chilblains.............. pee on them!

I had them earlier in this year, but I got some Elocan cream from the doctor, and then bought some Mountain Horse Polar Breeches.....they are WONDERFUL......I hardly take them off from the minute I go out in the morning, to the minute I finish the horses in the evening!! (Luckily I dont have to go anywhere important in the middle....just walking the dog etc!)
