I have recently bought a 4 year old Welsh Section D, he has been broken in for 9 months and until i bought him had never had hard feed, been in a stable, had rugs on been shod or had correctly fitting tack. In the past 5 months he has had all this thrown at him and hes simply taken it in his stride, he is very chilled. I did some hacking with him and a bit of schooling and i'm now giving him 2 months off.

The owners of the yard where i keep him are now telling me i'm wasting him, he isn't learning anything and he won't learn anything with me! They also say he'll never make it to the show ring if i carry on the way i am with him. They are now making my life very difficult constantly criticising me and now trying to get me to sell him to them!

These people are the last people on earth you'd want to sell a horse too! I witnessed a pitch fork beding thrown at a horse when it didn't do exactly as it was told!!

I am now trying to move my horse asap as i worry they will hurt him as when he was on part livery he became head shy, since i've switched to DIY he has overcome this and is very trusting in other people but often flinches when they approach him.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Your YO's can obviously see what a good horse you have and they want him! Lucky you, unlucky for them. Quite flattering that they like him so much, a little worrying that they seem to badgering you to sell though. If you have the opportunity to do so, I'd say move yourselves out of there to somewhere where you can do what you like.

I've read it quite often on here how YO's criticise the way their paying liveries keep and use, their own horses. Downright cheek. It's non of their business! I would never dream of telling someone what I thought of the way they did their horse unless asked for help or opinions, and even then I'd be tactful. Welfare situations are different, but do not apply in your situation.

I think, as a horsey people, that I am qualified to say ‘that is just horsey people for you’

It is a common factor that people always think they know better than you and can do your horse better than you can.

As it is your YO – I would either inform her that if she is so keen to see your horse not wasted, maybe she would like to help you with his schooling when he comes back from his time off, for free – or tell her to f off!
Realistically, what I would do, is move yards. I can’t stand people that dig others out for their own benefit. She is going to do your confidence no good at all!

Run! Fast! And take your welshie with you!

On the flip side of the coin – make sure you keep up with his groundwork whilst he is having time off because with youngsters you do need to be consistent.

It sort of is IMO as the horses on the yard are a representation of the business that they are running. Liveries must be kept in check! I don’t listen to the garblelings of anyone on the yard but if YO pulls me up on something then I listen. Or her mum, actually – but only because she is old, wise, and I am scared of her!

Definately move him ASAP! It annoys me so much when people say your wasting a horse, as long as the horse is well looked after what does it matter? Enjoy him he sounds lovely, but make sure you keep the handling side of things up during his holiday!

Thanks so much!! I don't feel like i'm wasting him at all, he happy, healthy and always pleased waiting at the gate at night!! During his time out he comes in every night where i handle him, groom him, change rugs etc. etc. In the mornings we like lots of fuss with breakfast and often helps me muck out!! Hes a very happy go lucky welshie. When he comes back into work i am taking him to an instructor so we can learn and grow together. I want it to be a partnership! I did confront the owners of the yard today and say he isn't for sale and never has been for sale. I still have my first pony and horse tottering about enjoying their OAP status, i don't tend to part with horses!

Good for you, they need to stay out of your business. They should only intervene if they believe the horses welfare is at stake, which clearly it isn't.

Over my years in the horsey world I have met some really lovely, caring, friendly people. I have also met some of the nastiest, vindictive, cruel persons who have ever drawn breath. I suppose the horsey world reflects society, both good & bad.

I digress though, when you get a chance I would definately move yards, they obviously have the capacity to make life difficult for you & you can do without that. Keep your chin up!

Good on you. I also have a now 5 1/2yr old Welsh Cob, who I got as a 3 1/2yr old. I've was having egular lessons to start with and alot of hacking. I've always tried to make him enjoy his work and never pushed him too far. As a reward I now have a horse I can take anywhere without him stressing about anything its great. I may or maynot start doing more with in next year, but at this age I can't see the rush
