See Sky news saying a ban is being called on these, I say a ban on anything being released inc balloons, into the sky should be banned and treated as litter as those that release them don't tidy them up but left for us countryfolk to do that. Let's hope people listen

couldnt agree more a friend of mines 2 year old gelding came in from the field last summer with an horrendous cut on his back leg spent weeks in hospital and had a skin graft luckily hes fine now but the only thing he could have been cut by was one of these lanterns which we kept finding in the field it was a clean cut like being cut with a cheese wire ..horrid things !!!!

The NFU actively campaigns against these lanterns. Apparently these cause crop fires as well as animal deaths - cows have been known to eat them. My home is thatched - another reason to object.

Someone did have a letter in H+H objecting. This was countered by H+H saying what a wonderful sight they make. I can only guess that the lantern retailers have a large advertising budget with IPC, the owners of Horse and Hound.

I think the first step is to advise BHS and NFU of any injuries caused by these lanterns.

Unless a substantial listed thatched property is taken out by one of these lanterns, I guess this will just rumble on. Should a property of that rebuild cost be damaged by a lantern, my bet is that the insurer will try court action.

As far as I am aware, all the major national equine publications are owned by publishers with other interests ie bridal mags. Therefore they are unlikely to participate in any campaign against these lanterns.

Letters to regional horse magazines asking folks to contact their MPs, are more likely to be successful.

I thought health and safety would have stopped these before they even started. and as for H+H yeah lovely sight.

I agree with most things on this thread but not balloons...

I have a few friends including myself who released a balloon in memory of a beloved family member who passed away. I understand the releasing of 100's of balloons etc is'nt nice but a ban on that altogether I would be gutted about. A couple of friends used to tie messages to theirs and send them across the world in a balloon. We can't stop everything in the world that could harm a horse. Noone wants to see horses hurt but nature will take its course regardless :)

They are banned in a lot of countries already and honestly can't wait for it to happen here.

At my old yard I used to get my horse in with an awful sweat and very stressed because they would land in his field and frighten the life out of him. They are dangerous and littering.

My husband is a firefighter so obviously we have firefighter friends, and was nosing through his mates facebook photos and he was sending a lantern up and in the background I could see they were at a campsite!!!!!!

How fricken stupid, he should know better!!!!

I've put this on here many times now,but I will keep putting it on, as even if one more person sees this and realises the dangers then that may be one more animal life saved.

This is a picture of my three months pregnant arab mare 24 hours after colic surgery to remove a piece of wire from her gut. Most likely this wire was cut and baled in her hay and came from a chinese (Chimera) lantern.

The wire was so thin she would never have known that she had swallowed it. She had 2 abcesses, a perforation and peritonitis. It was touch and go. Somehow she pulled through and held onto her baby. She now has a beautiful month old filly foal at foot and the vets say the fact that I have them both is nothing short of a miracle.

The bill was 7.5k. She endured a four hour operation, two weeks in intensive care at the vets, many many drugs including strong antibiotics, four months of box rest, two months of very restricted turnout. All so someone could say, "oh how pretty"

Please feel free to share her story, or put people who are interested and may share it in touch with me. I feel the more people that are aware of it the better to be honest.

Anyway, here she is 24 hours after surgery

Ban the blody things!!!
I can be fined for throwing a sweet wrapper down, but it's all right to set hundreds of these things into the sky to come down wherever.
And while they are at it, ban just anybody having fireworks, make them take a coarse and get a liscence. :( The rubish from spent fireworks is just half the problem. :(

there is a company - sorry aged so memory bad - looking at a harmless bio- degrable one - ie harmeless where lands though still doesnt get awat from the flame thing - personally i walked to top of a hill today sat and ate jelly babies for my step dad - he loved that placed and loved ljelly babies lol so does my daughter now - at his funeral me and daughter laid jelly babies and a toy tractor under a tree in cemetry - we dont need things to float to sky - we just look up and hes there - love you david you rogue but a good dad thank you xxx

I remember seeing a report a while back (can't remember where) pointing out that these lanterns from a distance in the dark are completely indistinguishable from emergency flares. Not likely to happen very often, but either way round that would be a very bad mix-up.

personally i do not see the point in them at all - sorry if offend but do you need to set something a flame to remeber some one - and read reason behind them - persoanlly some one seeing money to be made here selling an "old" tradititon from china . cant beat jelly babies sat on a hill with the fells around you then laying back in a sudden wave of sun and laughing - best tribute to a very dear loved one and yep tears but huge smiles to ( left a few jelly babies for him ) :)

I have made my feelings known about these damn things before, they take literally months to rot away, and then the wire is stilll left, apart from the fire hazard, they aint so bloody pretty looking like a giant used jonny hanging in a tree month after month after month, our litte bit of quiet time in the ever shrinking bit of countryside is allready ruined regularly by flytipping and illegal parkers, we don't need this flying garbage as well :mad:

I can't believe that they are legal. They are pointless, dangerous and unsightly. Anyone buying them is a fool lured in by some profit hungry corporation with no sense of responsibility.

They cause litter, death and serious injury to all kinds of animals some of which may be endangered species, they also cause fires in crops, buildings, forests and on moorland, which before long will result in death and destruction of something important.

The worst thing of all is they are not traceable so if your home is burnt to the ground by one you can't sue the arsonist who intentionally sent a flaming torch into the sky or the company who deliberately marketed such a dangerous object.

i agree these things are ridiculous and should never have been allowed on the market.
Its not just land and land animals that are at risk from them, but i have heard when being on holiday etc whales and dolphins eat them as they dont know what they are and then they are at a high risk of dieing.

I hate the things. I hope that they ban them, but doubt it- too many selfish chavs around that like them...

At my mum's new year party she waned some, and I made her compromise and get some that had bottoms in that you weighted with sand, that stood around the garden. They were smaller and rectangular, with patterns cut in them, and looked lovely, but didn't go anywhere.
