Hello

Does anyone have experience of chipped withers? Horse has swelling in the withers Thursday and put it down to horsefly bites. Worse on Friday but also found a wound that can only be described as a “scuff” and assumed allergic reaction. Severe swelling yesterday and got emergency vet out today. Wound is a puncture wound about half an inch deep and horse has chipped its withers. Vet couldn’t understand how me and my mate had missed the wound but showed him a photo taken on Friday and it looks exactly like a scuff - skin still there and just the fur taken off. No infection, luckily. Either rolled vigorously and caught a stone or reared messing in the field and gone over.

Hoss is away with the fairies on some vet voodoo and has meds to take for the next week. If no improvement in either swelling or hole healing then vets said he’ll come back out and X-ray to check the chip and if there’s actually further damage.

Has anyone had something similar and what was general recovery like?

The majority of horses recover not a problem. Is the chip loose? Will it need taken out? If there is anything floating about in there it will keep abcessing until it's out.

Not chipped but cracked, like you either rolling on stone or going over arsing in field. Left for about 8 weeks and then come back into work as normal. Withers were flatter and wider. If bone chips floating and irritating will need to be removed.

Vet has said if it keeps an easing to let him know and he’ll come back out to X-ray and find the chip and check what damage has been done. I’m hoping he’ll just heal up no issues - he’s not high maintenance accident prone wise, just throwing shoes wise! Thoroughbred, owned 10 years and had vet out to him three times, including this visit! Touch wood he’s just bounces back
