I posted a while back about my horse bucking and kicking after about 20 minutes being hacked out, got vet who said had sore back put on box rest with antinflamortories for a week, said if no improvement then get chiropractor to look at him.

Anyway Chiropractor came Wednesday said pelvis was out but went back in easily, said to put back out in field (should never have been box rested) and to ride him in a couple of days. Well attempted to take him out today and instead of kicking and bucking after 20 minutes he started as soon as i got on him.

So I am now at a lose, have heard another back person is over this Fri who I have used before with ok (well probably great) results on a mare that was a handful. But after doing a search and reading an earlier thread I am not sure what to do now.

Not sure I have copied link right but this is the person, scared me the first time I met him but he did seem to help, and the horse I have now is not like my previous mare.

I guess what I am asking is do I get him to look at my horse this weekend or do i wait for Chiro that I had Wed to come back in a months time.

did you have an a registered physio out? They never usually tell you to turn them out after usually say leave in till next day. If you google acpat you can look for registered physio's in your area, they will be fully insured too.

Yeh, he was recommended by the vet, and I did ask whether he should stay in stable for night or be put out considering he said he should not have been box rested for a week and he said to to put straight out. Just did what I was told.

Ahh bless ya, I would have done the same though! Id get a second opinion if were my horse. Even though they are all meant to do the same job I think they are like farriers - some better than others :-)

It sounds to me like it may take a little while with resting and gentle exercise and a good registered back specialist. My recomendation would be to get someone who can work on the soft tissue and not just adjust. I would also go back to your vet just to make sure there is nothing else he wants to do in light of the horses reaction following chiro

I'm sorry, but anyone who says a pelvis is "out" and they put it back in is talking out of their arse.

Agree with this - what exactly do they mean when they say the pelvis is 'out'?!

Re 'pelvis out' I am waiting for my boy to get stiff again so I can take some video as he will be noticeably unlevel on top when viewed walking from behind...... normally skewed down to the left. It is my understanding that this is caused by the muscles becoming tight on one side (as my pelvis muscles do it too!) stopping the pelvis from working levelly.... The chiropractor can work on releasing these muscles and post treatment my horses arse will be walking level again.. I hope that makes sense I do think chiro terminology isnt always the best!

OP can you long rein this horse out?

I think it get difficult to know when pain becomes habit (I dont get bucking just reluctance to canter on one lead) But I would probably be looking at a more thorough veterinary investigation if there wasnt any improvement.

One of my horses was noticeably sore and dragging a hind limb sometime ago so I called my vet. The vet did some manipulation and told me my mares pelvis was 'out' and because of this I could consider having her pts as she would only ever be able to walk and trot - never canter or never jump. I was understandably shocked by this so called my own osteopath for some advise. She deals with equines as well as humans so I got her out for a 2nd opinion & she did some work on her and advised her back was sore from work (young horse just beginning to work in an outline) and lo and behold after 2 visits from her and regular use of the equissage my mare was fine. This was 3 years ago and I have th eosteo out every 6-9 months for a check up, but touch wood I have had no major problems since. I think saying the pelvis is out is a phrase that doesn't actually mean anything without proper explanation and you should definately query what was meant by this and get a 2nd opinion. What i will say though is that my osteo always says to turn the horses out after treatment as they need gentle movement to stop them stiffening up. Good luck

I would ring the chiro (I think you said this was the one vet recommended?) and tell them what has happened - and ask for more of an explanation on this pelvis he is talking about - did he mean the pelvis bone was out of alignment and he put it back in (I find that hard to imagine but am no expert) or that the muscles and ligaments surrounding it were putting strain on it and pulling it at an abnormal angle (I would find that easier to believe). If the pelvis IS actually somehow out of alignment (!) the best person to work on it is an osteopath, who works on spinal alignment. There is a school of thought/a widely held belief (I have no idea if it is fact or not) that it is impossible for the horse's spine - the actual bones - to become out of alignment, which is why I think many are sceptical of your chiro's claim.

You could also ring your vet for advice on whether he thinks you should continue with this person or find another manipulative therapist.

Finally, have you considered if your horse's behaviour could just be high spirits from feeling fresh having been on box rest? Has your horses behaved like this before?

Best of luck sorting it out.
