I've had my mare since she was 5. She's now 22. When she was eventing fit she occasionally suffered from choke. Normally when she came into the stable and scoffed her hay. These incidents lasted max 30 mins and weren't too traumatic. She has been retired for the last 4 yrs but teeth etc kept up to date. Recently she has suffered 2 very traumatic bouts, lasting 2-3 hrs and she was very distressed. Today she suffered another shorter incident. (3 incidents in 2 months)
The two bad incidents were while she was only on grass. Todays was when she was eating hay.
I've had her scoped and they have found nothing untoward. I'm really worried about bringing her in this autumn to be stabled overnight.
Anyone had any experience of this?

One of my Arab's had a few issues with choke I found its worse in summer when my grass is short and he then gets a net of hay and scoffs it, always worse when I fed in the field and when it was dry so I stopped giving dry hay loose on the field and it stopped.

The only thing I would be concerned with is that she is choking on grass I would get her teeth checked by a specialist vet or dentist because she is now 22 she may have a dental issue.

I would only feed her soaked hay in a small holed net so she can't grab mouthfuls of it and see how she goes.

Thank you - I've had her teeth checked by both vets that attended, plus the vet that scoped and a consultant equine dentist.
