Poor Robbie has either had an allergic reaction or has a sore throat type thing as he cant eat anyting without choking (besides bran mash so far) We phoned the vet first time as it looks so awfull to watch but he assured us as Robbie had a runy nose it meant he was coping himself and said to leave it for now and phone back if it gets worse. But since then its started gettign worse (i.e. for everything he eats) and hes now squeeling presumably from pain even after just eatign grass, so hes now in a restricted grazing field with plenty of water and i will try more bran mash, but i dont knwo what to do! i dont want to put the vet to to much trouble but hes got to eat something! and im worried its more serious

eek

Never be worried about phoning the vet, even if they think that it is not necessay to come out they should be able to put your mind at ease with their advise. Hope Robbie gets better soonxxxx

I would phone the vet if you're worried but to me it sounds like typical choke. What kindof hard feed does he get (if any) if it's cubes then don't feed him cubes without them being soaked. It may take a little while to wear off but he will squeal and shudder and look awful at first. If he has been doing so for more than an hour then I would definatly get the vet out. If he stops by himself then for atleast the next six days soak his food completely as he'll be very sore and you don't want to irritate it further.
Hope this helps, any questions feel free to PM as I have a horse who chokes and know how horrible it looks.

Thanks !

he normally doesnt have feed in summer, but has been having alfa a with his bute, is that ok? (i water it down alot anyway) or shall i feed bran mash with a supplement for the next week?
He is sorting himself out within 15mins so far but it does happen every time he tries to eat anything

Your right it looks horrid, he rolls around groaning and lies still with his eyes closed for abit, then will get up and tense his muscles and squeal, then starts to get a runny nose and recover

He is having physio (in walk over poles inhand) on Teusday, is that goign to be to much for him? We were supposed to start riding him after to (walk hack) ?

I would be getting the vet out. Vets will always advise (I thought usually in choke?) to take food away until it has cleared.

It is very horrible - but I would be concerned as he is rolling about and it doesnt seem to have passed completely by the sounds of it.

My mare roles about and looks like she's collic-ing when she has choke. I think horses all react to it slightly differently, possibly due to pain thresholds (sp?) or something? Yes food should be taken away for atleast an hour and make sure he has water.
Physio should be fine, my friends gelding choked at camp and she rode him the next day and he was fine.
I would go for bran mash and supp for next couple of days as I guess that's a bit more sloppy than the alfa a.
If it is happening everytime he eats is there anyway you could stop eating all together for an hour or so to let his throut settle a bit.

I have taken food away, the first time i waited several hours and turned him out on short grass and that started it up again so i left it over night with out anything to eat and tried in the morning when he appeared normal but no such luck

then somebody passing decided to feed him an apple (lucky i saw on the cctv and rushed out to stop them feeding more to him

) and that caused it to start again

so last night he had bran mash with his bute and he was ok but this morning in a bare paddock he was ok untill he found a small clump of long grass which being hungry he ate and got worse again

poor boy is hungry

If a horse is getting repeated episodes of choke, then removing food such as hay for an hour will not really help the throat. The alvioli in the throat become very irritated, and actually take many hours to recover. Which is why a horse that has repeated episodes of choke should be investigated by the vet.

Also, I would stear clear of a bran mash - but would feed very wet, sloppy feed only.

I hadn't realised it had gone onto the next day. My mare choked twice in a row and have everything taken off her for a few hours and was fine. However I agree amymay knowing now that it's gone onto the next day I would get the vet out.
I've no idea what bran mash is but was assuming it would be sloppy, if not then I wouldn't feed it either.
