Thumper has had choke twice this winter - the second time being last night.

He doesn't particularly seem to gobble his food down, and I always dampen his feeds. So I'm at a bit of a loss as to why it may be happening.

For info he is fed Alfa A, pony nuts and balancer.

Does anyone have any experience or tips they can offer??

I only stopped this happening with my old TB by swapping nuts for mix and making the feed wet and leaving it until mushy! Good luck its horrible to watch a horse choke.
 
one of my youngsters got choke 3 weeks running this winter, had to get vet every time. i now feed her an absolute soup - her feed is covered in water, i.e. over the top of the feed, more water than feed. then she has to slurp it, and there's no way she can gulp down a dryish bit. i let it soak for 5-10 mins before she gets it, too.
she doesn't mind this soup, and it's saving me a fortune in vet's bills!
she's on 1 scoop Readigrass, 1 scoop Hi-Fi, 1/4 scoop Alfa, 1 cup balancer - the first two mainly so it keeps her busy long enough for the others to eat theirs. so, quite dry if i don't turn it into soup.
i'd try this - cover the feed with water, and a bit more, and let it absorb it, before giving it to him. add a bit of chaff (treated the same way, of course) if he's not keen cos it's so sloppy. best of luck!

So it sounds as if a much wetter feed is required.

Thankfully it has passed quite quickly both times - but I am obviously keen to avoid it again. It's so distressing to see, and even more so for the horse.
 
Megs had choke just before Christmas it was a vet job, tube in the lot. The hay we were getting at the time was a bought in as ours had all gone. Megs glands had swollen with an allergy to the hay and then when she had her Safe and Sound tea which was wet it got stuck. She was on anitbiotics,
injected by me for five days and ventipullmin in her feed. I soaked the hay for five hours and fed it off the floor and she was fine. We are now on our own good hay and she seems to be doing great.
 
My TBx is very prone to choke. I soak her nuts for a couple of hours before feeding - she ends up with more soup than feed but touch wood she has only had choke once in eight months down from daily at it's worst.
 
Missy had choke about a week ago, I also recommend "sloppy" feed , Its not nice at all to watch and can be very distressing to say the least .

Im now feeding missy on very wet mix , sugar beet and linseed all very sloppy indeed

Have you spoken to your vet at all amymay ? perhaps they can look into it further ? perhaps maybe not necessary but have a word see what they say .
Missy is the same as thumper , she doesnt gorb her food , but Im far more careful now these days .
 
My old cob had this a few times this winter, couldn't feed cubes had to feed a mix with very wet sugar beet, but I would recommend you get him scoped, my friends horse used to choke and he had a growth on his throat

Hi Colleen - no, as it's usually over pretty quickly so have not had the need to call him.

He will be at the yard in a fortnight though to review a horse currently on box rest, so will run it by him them.

Following everyone's advice on here though, I have been thoroughly soaking his feed. So touch wood it won't happen again.......
