I have an elderly pony who came to live with us in Feb, within 24 hrs she had choke however due to me not feeding correctly.
Since then as I've got to know her and her ways she's had choke several times, even on wet grass.
She has been checked by the vet and we've come to the conclusion that she's a greedy eater.
My question is that shortly I will start to feed her again for the winter and does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should feed and how

As the vet has been involved I assume her teeth have been checked?

My mare can choke and had it really badly last December, I took an hour of tubing to clear the blockage. She choked on a beet with chaff mixed through it.

She now is not fed any form of chaff. Any hard feed she has is in the form of a mash. In the winter when she comes in hungry she will only be fed out of a trickle feeder or net and the hay will have been dampened.

We had an elderly made with her teeth up to date who would choke on soaked grassnuts, if there was no chaff mixed through it. We decided that it was just because she stuffed her food crown as fast as possible.

Greed is often the cause, feed in a large container so that the feed is well spread out, add a brick or large stone or two to also break up the food. Make sure feed is well damped and any soaked feed has broken down and absorbed the water.

Teeth can be a problem if sharp as the horse may not chew properly, the other thing to check with teeth is the very back molars, it's amazing the number of horses who have overgrowth of these teeth, especially if a dental gag is not used.
