My boy gave me a bit of a scare this evening - after a chilled out evening grooming and pottering on the yard I noticed he was having difficulty swallowing and getting a bit distressed, shaking head. Thought I'd keep an eye on him for a bit, 5 mins later things not improving and then a big cough and a lot of gunk flew out. This didn't clear the blockage and I was going to phone the vet as must be choke...walk around the yard furiously trying to get reception, get back to box and he's back eating food happily and apart from my blood pressure things seem fine! Phew!

Apart from the Speedi beet which I make quite wet I fed some balancer and scoop of hi fi - I assumed that wet feeds were safer in terms of preventing choke but am I mistaken? Or is Starr just a greedy hog and bit off more than he could handle? Has this happened to anyone else?

It was probably the hifi, we literally make our horses that are prone to choke, soup. In your case or probably was a one off and him eating too quickly. Most horses will clear the blockage themselves but its frightening to watch.

I think you're right Ella - I've increased the amount of Hi Fi ironically in an effort to make him slow down but I don't think he's caught on! I will pour more water over feed tomorrow morning. He's not suffered from choke in the past however have seen him struggle once after gorging on his hay - he sorted himself out after a bit
