Hello. It's my own fault... I think I researched joint supplement so much that I eventually addled myseld. I eventually went for Naf Superflex. It arrived today and yes, it has good levels of Glucosamine, MSM and HA. But I'm not sure how I missed how rubbishly poor the chondroitin levels are! 12mg/day?! However much Naf tell me it's all to do with the ratios of the ingredients and they've perfected them, I'm still to be convinced. That's my rant. And, of course, I'm even more annoyed as it's my own fault for not taking this in before I bought!!

I'm thinking of buying a 'standalone' chondroitin supplement - any thoughts on which? There are some designed for humans and dogs which seem to have OK levels (eg 1000mg/day) - maybe OK??

I wouldnt worry about it. Your horse isn't going to absorb it anyway regardless of how much you pump into him/her. Much the same with HA - its better injected IV at regular intervals than wasting money on orally supplementing it. Stick to 99% pure glucosamine HCl.

A recent scientific report featured on R4's Today programme, so I assume it's authentic, said they don't make any difference to joints anyway - in humans, so presumably in other mammals, too. I do wonder about supplements.

Why would you want to feed your horse an animal by-product?

(in case you weren't aware, but chondroitin is made from shark cartilage)

I always found it much cheaper to buy stand alone MSM and Glucosamine (99%), then you can feed the optimum ratios without any extra fillers.

Forage Plus do staight chondroitin. Recomended daily amount (if want to feed it) is 4gms most supplements have less as is expensive.

Aviform sell cheapest, high quality glucosamine and MSM can find.

I just don't think horses are supposed to eat ground up shark or shellfish for that matter on top of that it gives my OH a very sore stomach and I have always wondered if it's linked to some horses getting ulcers .
I stopped giving joint supplements a while ago when I went ' back to nature ' with my feeding have I had any joint issues or more stiffness .....no.

I'd read a few articles in the scientific journals and I thought chondroitin was absorbed, just it depends on the source/composition as to how well?

Thanks for the tips on where to get 'standalone' chondroitin - I will investigate further as to whether it's worth it or not!

Personally (and, of course, this is just personally) I've got no problem with fishy things going in the horse. They've been used in domestic animals for thousands of years and I can't quite get an ethical problem with that.

It's not an ethical issue ( although what they do with sharks is horrible ) but just why would horses be designed to absorb animal matter ?

^ This is the real ethical issue.

OK - am def with you on that point.

I don't think it's a case of if they're 'designed' to absorb animal matter - their bodies can't necessarily distinguish where different molecules originate so it doesn't really make a difference.

But yes, HOW these substances are obtained is a different matter...

Have you thought of using micronised linseed? I have been feeding this for joints for ages. Also there is a co. in Devon - can't remember their name at the moment, think they have been in the supps industry about the longest, they produce several supps with or with condroitin. Will remember their name later, the products are out on the yard - unless someone else knows? They do it for people too!
