Choosing a stallion

I am currently deciding on which stallion to go with this year for my mare.
Ideally I would like to breed a horse firstly that can jump, and then have nice movement that may be suitable for eventing.

I would like to keep a medium build but improve on my mare's neck and hindquarter primarily, and hope to encourage a more uphill build.
Photos of my mare are in this thread - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=368058

So far I have a list of stallions I am considering:

- Balou Du Rouet
- Centadel
- Clinton II
- Lauterbach

Or do you think one of these may be more suitable?

- Califax
- Castino
- Champion FP
- Colander
- Conthargos
- Converter
- Cornet's Stern
- Epsom Gesmeray
- Last Man's Hope
- Linton
- Nintender
- Quicksilber
- Quintador
- Quintender
- Sheikh It
- Sir Shutterfly
- Stakkatol
- Toulouse

I am getting a little overwhelmed by all these quality stallions which I can access. I really just want to breed the best I possibly can at this moment, but being new to the game I think it is harder for me to pick some things out about stallions, and I am also not very familiar with their current offspring and how they are doing, which characteristics they seem to acquire.

Balou du Rouet is certainly proving to be an exceptional sire and so should definitely not be ruled off your list. Otherwise my personal favourites would be Clinton II, Califax, Cornet's Stern or Linton.

IMO you cant go wrong with Quidam de Revel lines, they tend to knock out very good jumpers with good trainable temperaments and they look nice (well to me anyway!!). If your mare were mine i would look for a stallion with good limbs and feet and a good neck. She is actually quite similar in "weak" points to my mare and i put mine to Luidam (Billy Twomeys horse). I was v lucky and got a lovely colt who is a registered AES stallion.

I like Balou du Roulet for her, I think he is a build which has the possibility to produce a nice eventer with my mare, although his hind end may not improve as much as some others.
He also has Galoubet A, as does my mare. - http://www.sporthorse-data.com/dbtestmating.php?&sireid=10344766&damid=10560216
Are they too close? Should I be looking at some of these others more closely.

Eventrider, yes Clinton II was probably my second choice. There are just so many nice stallions I get so overwhelmed! :)

I would not say though that Clinton II would necessarily produce an eventer for you. Of the choice for eventers I would say Balou, Califax and Cornet's Stern.

We have a home bred 3yr old filly by Lauterbach she has lovely fab temperament, we are on with backing her now, very bold, fab movement & big bold jump (loose). we have bred for eventing, her mother is an intermediate eventer by Primitive rising she didn't have the best neck but this filly has.
we have done the BEF futurity with her and she gained 1st premiums in eventing every time i have taken her forward.
We are thing of putting another mare to him because we like this one so much!!

Any photos Rascal? I would love to see any if you have them, of the mother too. Sounds like a lovely filly!

Would you be worried about the amount of line-breeding with Balou? I like him otherwise and I think his type would be a nice match for my mare and might even add a bit of height which would be a plus.

Hi
I have ridden a lot of Balou du Roulet offspring - all very good horses but some can be quite quirky - but still good quality. This seems to be the general feeling from everyone I have spoken to also. Paul Schockemohle seems to breed a lot of them and he seems to know what he is doing! I am not really up on jumping stallions, but just thought I would tell you my experience of the Balou babies. Happy husband hunting!!

I really quite like Balou, but I am a little worried about the amount of linebreeding that brings into my mares pedigree.

Do you think Lauterbach has the potential to produce eventers?

SAMgirl, I appreciate knowing what you have experienced with the Balou babies. I see you are more dressage based, do they tend to have nice movement?
I am interested if you know any more about any of the other stallions on my list. :)

Thanks everyone so far for your help!

For a gamble on a young stallion with a temperment to die for would be Cendy x Consul x Come Back II. I met him as a 3yo (owned in part by Craig Millard) he moved lovely, just such a nice person.

Hi...........

" because the mare carried over her genetics more then the stallion."

That's not really the case. Any offspring gets 50% of it's genes from each parent. Scientific fact.
What that 50% carries in terms of genetic coding and information is variable each time.

I have 1st hand experience with a number of the horses on your list. I assume from your mares pedigree that you are in Australia so need recommendations on what you can use via frozen semen?

I am a huge Balou fan. And work with a lot of his offspring. Generally they tend to have attractive heads, medium frames, not overly tall, i would say harmonious types as everything fits togetehr well. I adore their temperaments, a little sensitive but very kind and above average movement for a jumper. Luckily he tends not to throw back any of the Baloubet conformation faults like upright shoulders and big ugly heads. I dont think the double cross of Galoubet will be a problem as it will be far enough back, and he was an immense sire.

Clinton I have not seen so many foals yet but he impressed with his temperament and he is more strongly framed than Balou but nopt a really huge horse. I know the rider really rated the feel he gave and his work ethic.

califax I like a lot, a total gentleman to handle. Wouldnt suit your mare though as a very slight tendancy to have upright limbs. Quintenderproduces outstanding foals. Wow they have presence and charisma and athleticism. Good movers but I think they may be on the sharper side. Quintender himself jumps in a super technique and is a very well balanced horse.

Cornets Stern I would only use on a mare with perfect feet as he has a CO trait of fairly small contracted feet. Lovely stamp of a horse though.

Hope that helps a little

Thankyou so much for your help.
In the end I was tossing up between Balou and Lauterbach, and I have decided to go with Balou for next year.

I really appreciate your advise and experience with their foals though!
