Christmas Presents for Sharer and Share Horse

Hi everyone

I have been sharing my horse since July and this is my first share. So far, it is going really well!

I was thinking that I should start my Christmas shopping and was wondering what people get for their horses and sharers at Christmas or what an appropriate present is for a horse? I'm not too worried about budget, more just bouncing ideas about. A show rug? Treats? A treat ball? A new grooming kit? I always see his owner sharing matchy matchy product giveaways on Facebook and have seen all pink grooming kits that look really nice.

I would also like to get something for his owners, who are a mum and daughter and I get on with them really well. I was thinking of just getting them typical girly gifts like a gift set each rather than horsey orientated gifts but all are suggestions welcome.

Thats a lovely thought, however I wouldn't go overboard as they might not have got you anything so would feel bad. If the mum drinks a bottle of wine and a little something for the daughter horsey book, pretty gloves? Or just get something for the horse?

Why not think about whether you are buying something that will actually be used/ is needed? Does the horse actually need a new rug/ grooming kit etc? Will he notice ? If you really want to get the horse something, what about a nice Christmas feed? You could get parsnips, swede, carrots, broccoli, apples, carrots and make up a nice dinner for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. This is what I do with mine! They don't know what Christmas is but at least you know he will enjoy a special feed.

And for the owners I would just get a card personally, but if you really want to give them a physical gift what about something that uses a bit less plastic? Those girly gift sets always seem to come packaged in loads of plastic, I really hate receiving them. If the daughter is older, you could get them a bottle of Prosecco for Christmas Eve. I did think it would be a bit awkward if I had gone overboard. A bottle of wine or a gift just for the horse is a great idea. I'm new to sharing and so not sure what other people do at Christmas time etc It's nice to know people actually don't expect much!

The daughter is older and a bottle of prosecco and a card is a great idea as they can share it on Christmas Eve! I was worried about getting the horse something he doesn't really need and so a few treats and a Christmas dinner is fab!

When I shared I would just buy the owner a token gift - bottle of wine, prosecco or something practical like a cosy headband or warm hat.

For the horse, I think I bought Christmas themed treats

I got a lovely personalised thermal mug from my field buddy last year. One side had my horse on the other the 3 amigos who share the field. It was so thoughtful and very treasured. I've just dug it out now to start using this winter.

I was sent a mug with the picture of my horse for Christmas from a friend in Denmark. It's been my most favourite present.
So glad you're enjoying your share horse, OP. I think everyone loves a thoughtful present, regardless of the cost. How about a small homemade hamper of horse shampoo and lotions with things like a grooming mit or a stable name plague or sheepskin mit ?

My sharer usually gets me shower or bath things because I love a good bath and last year it was hand made chocolates which were really nice. I don’t expect anything but the fact she has in her busy schedule found time to think of me is a really nice gesture. In return because I am rather unimaginative and buy her something she doesn’t need I pay for her to go on a fun ride, the gallops or her riding club subs for a year.

Last year my sharer got me a picture of Sugar that looks like it’s a watercolour but was actually done on the computer. I knitted her an ear warmer and made her some cookies.

This year I did a desk calendar with pictures of Sugar on it ?

I tended to go with booze for share horse owner and a bag of carrots and a bag of pears for share horse. No need for anything huge for the horse - they don’t know it’s Christmas!

We also had a lovely tradition of going for a Christmas Eve morning hack together, decked out in tinsel, Santa onesies etc ?
