does it have to be christmasy?? rudolph should be easy... xmas tree? green sheet with loads of tinsle and decorations? santa? red sheet/rug with cotton where the white bits should be?

ok we did this on saturday !!

first was a christmas tree with and angel - green sheet with lots of tinself and ball balls all over it - at the bottom of the sheet get presents made of felt and put them along - then it looks like presents roudn teh christmas tree !!

second was rudolph with an elf !

you need to make it, pre bought stuff is horrible for fancy dress!!

Xmas pudding is easy, dress child in brown everything, bit of stuffing around childs middle, make a creamy wavy splodge for childs hat.....

reindeer, way to common!!

Xmas tree, green rug with decs and make child fairy on the top.

Do you have a £1 shop local to you???- they are great for lights etc running off batteries, you can light the pony up!!

Failing that, xmas ghost...white sheet for the ghost for pony and child can be scrooge or something in black!!!

Pony as a sheep and child as shepherd?

I'm tempted to say pony as a donkey and child dressed as mary but I have a feeling he might object to that

I'd be looking to do something different so that it stands out. I'd be willing to bet there will be plenty of xmas trees and presents there. If you choose a common design then you have to be better than everyone else because they can compare you directly. I think a lot of marks go for originality

All non xmas themes but indian and horse (sorry native american and horse!!) Make a headress round his hat, add some fringes to his trousers and paint handprints on the horse (kiddies water based paint BRUSHES off easily and won't harm them, dont wash it off, it streaks~!!!) Remove noseband and browband from bridle. Ride bareback if pony safe.

Rockin' horse, p£1 shop again loadsa toy instruments attached to a sheet painted in wild colours, child as elvis/david bowie/brian may etcetc.

Headless horseman, put horse black fringes on reins (old jogging bottoms etc) and pull childs jumper over head to look headless.

Thought I had 100s of fantastci ideas when I started in this byut have now run out!!!

Are both children boys or is the other one a girl by any chance? Got a few xmas ideas that we have put together over the years but only done girl costumes. I have also held a fancy dress class at our RDA show for the last few years - am happy to email you some pics of the winners if you are still stuck but they are not xmas theme. Some are amazingly ingenious though - a rosette was the best!

Measure the childs length roughly from shoulder to knee, then get an old white sheet, fold it in half and then draw on a big semicircle using that measurement as your guide. Cut it out and you have a circle. That can become a cloak which will cover some of the pony as well. I have a very effective outfit this way which is really an angel or a fairy. I got a bit carried away and got got the sewing machine out and sewed loads of tinsel around the bottom. And some kiddy fairy wings you can pick up for a couple of quid in most toy shops pinned on the back. This "outfit" keeps on coming out and never looks out of place (not that we ever win anything either lol)

I am going on a fancy dress pub ride on Sunday as the night before christmas, over sized pyjamas and dressing gown (so I can wear proper clothes under them) night-cap on hat, empty stocking on one side of saddle and a mouse on the other side, hot water bottle pinned to the dressing gown. Tinsel in Ambers mane and tail, 4 socks with the toe seam undone on her legs and a matching scarf round her neck, all in red and green. Also glitter shapes on amber with thin layer of vaseline/lip salve and glitter shaken on. (comes off with baby whipes.
