I have recently acquired a small pony via a rescue society. She has identical chunks taken from close to the base of both ears. Someone has suggested this may be how gypsies mark their horses - does anyone know if this is correct?

Someone once told us this about the grey pony in my sig. She has a chunk missing from the top of her ear (v-shape). However, it was later confirmed by first the vet and then her old owner that it was thought to be caused by her catching her ear on barbed wire.
So erm, not much help about your horse, but I suppose it could be true.
