Picking up a 12.2hh cob cross (Dartmoor Hill pony passport but very obviously part cob) with a longish back on Tuesday. Has obvious signs of sweet-itch but not as bad as our temporary guest. I would like to get her a lightweight turnout with neck asap - as in, for when she arrives! That’s what we used to do with my original NF - then swap to Rambo hoody in spring. Currently she doesn’t own any rugs.

The current owner tried on a 4ft9 and said it was very tight and too small. So I am guessing 5ft3? In my experience, one size too small goes on ok but looks like a miniskirt. 2 sizes two small doesn’t go on really at all. Before I press the button and order…do you think I am picking the right size?

Not sure if helpful but I have a chunky heavy horse and usually buy from Ruggles and Big Horse Shop however I'm finding the Shires rugs have a generous depth to them and chest and neck are sufficient.

ETA: my lad measures 7ft and is in a 7ft Shires Tempest and I didn't go up a size. It fits him perfectly. He was previously in a 7'3" Weatherbeeta and it was starting to look like a miniskirt.

My 12.2 Dartmoor takes a 5 ft. She has spindly legs but a very bullish neck & big shoulders. So maybe 5 ft 3 if he's chunkier than her?

A new one...how exciting...! Good luck!

If it’s too big, will the neck be ridiculously long?
Possibly yes! I sent back so many rugs because of long necks! Especially weatherbeeta and gallop. Best for necks were Derby house but sadly shut down now. Masta are ok but they come up a bit smaller than other brands. Maxima equestrian do a nice turnout rug with a shorter neck x

I find rugs are usually more generous if they are full necks. Mine takes 5ft but some makes are too big if it’s a combo.

If you haven’t ordered yet, I’d go for a 5ft, rather than a 5ft 3in (obviously that depends on how short the 4ft 9in was).

I have gone for a 5ft3 (that I can add a neck to) to gauge size. Will try on the fly rug I know is 5ft6 before I open the packet. If the fly rug is ridiculously large, she needs a 5ft and it can go back. If only a bit too large, it’ll be the correct size. She’s the same build as our old 11.3hh (4ft9 rug) and 13hh (5ft6).

5ft 3 fitted perfectly, thanks everyone! Am going to see how the spot on stuff controls the itch, as it has made a huge difference already to our very sweet itchy temporary guest (who has had a very positive personality transplant now she’s no longer wriggling with irritation!).

Now to hunt for second hand sweet itch rugs for the summer - always an entertaining pastime!
