My 2 year old connemara x wb is looking pretty finished and pretty chunky. She's currently 14.3. At least 8 ins bone and wide rib cage. Do youngsters get less chunky ever ( so as they gain height they look lighter) or is she only going to get wider and chunkier as time goes on? By chunky, I mean heavy build.

Yes they can get chunkier, my Welsh D at three looked pretty adult then suddenly went juvenile looking again. He’s finally come into himself properly at 7. He’s a proper built boy 😁

In my experience they can get chunkier between 2 and 3 (depending on how well grown they are at 2) then go weirdly shaped at times before becoming adult shaped at 6. Between 6 and 8 they then solidify hugely.

I popped my xw Andrea Hicks saddle on her back the other day, and it's too narrow!

I wouldn’t read too much into that- they don’t have any either at 2, the shape of the back changes a huge amount by the time you do want to properly fit a saddle on

My 2 year old Rabbit has gone through several stages where he looks like a chunk and then ends up shooting up, before repeating the process.

At the moment he is 2 years and 4 months old, is bum high as going through a growth spurt again and is currently looking like an absolute unit! He's got a decent amount of bone on him which is what I wanted, but he is one chunky boy - 6'0 rugs are too small for him and 6'3 in some brands simply don't do up cause of his weird shape. I've had the vet and several friends look at him as I was concerned about his weight, but he is spot on. When he's finished a growth spurt he gets lanky for a few days before looking like a horse again x

Mine has quite a lot of TB on the warmblood side of her breeding - but I can't yet see much evidence of that! My main concern is that she will be too wide for me to ride - I have hips that don't stretch that far and had to sell a horse in the past for this reason. Hey ho. Fingers crossed she goes up and not out 🤞

What type of Warmblood is your girl she’s a beauty ? I’ve just purchased a Connie x Warmblood gelding he’s about 16 months currently and standing at 14.1 (dam was 15.3 Holstein/Hanoverian and sire was a 15.1 full Connie). I’m wondering if you’ve done the string test on her ? 😀 I’d add a picture but being a new member I don’t think I’m able too !

Mine's dam (who I also own) is Oldenburg/Westphalian x tb. All her backline of pedigree were over 16hh but she is 15hh for some reason! She has had 3 foals - they have all ended up about 15hh even where the stallion is over 16hh. She string tests to 15.1. She grew quickly and was the same size as yours at the same age but since then, she has slowed right down (as they are meant to do). She's just reached 14.3 at 2.5 years so I think the string test will be proved right and she'll end up 15.1. That's the right height for me - just don't want any smaller. She was stuck at 14.2 for quite a while and I began to think that was it, but she's now going up again.

Post a photo when you can, I'd love to see him. Connie x WB is quite an unusual combination.
