just wondering for what uses do you add cider vinegar to your horses feed ?

interested because friends new horse(with 5 stage vetting pass) came with a list of what he is fed daily and cider vinegar was on the list but with no reason to why and when she asked the previous owner her answer was

she gives it to all her horses daily as a tonic and for no other reason
so would be interested in hearing if you feed this to your horses for what reason
thanks

I've just started my 30 year old on it for her joints. She's virtually retired now but stills plods about with the kids occasionally and I'd like to do a bit more with her this summer, so she is getting it just to help keep her supple and her joints moving ok.
I also plop some in the 15 year olds breakfast too, just because I can't seeing it doing any harm.:)

I feed it for joints, skin conditon and to keep the flies off! Where I live flies are INCREDIBLE in the summer and I can honestly say that my two (who are the only ones on cider vinegar) never suffer like the others on the yard. I think it must make their blood taste 'funny' to the flies :D

AND it's good for people... :D

I think Readers Digest did a whole hardcover manual on the suff.

I feed it as a tonic too.. that IS a reason all it's own surely!

I recently started feeding our arthritic jack russell terrier Honeygar which is honey and cider vinigar and cannot believe the difference it has made in her, it was staggering. I used to feed Cider Vinigar to an older horse we had but haven't used it for years not having had an oldys. Think I might start feeding it to my 5 year old because it sounds as if it is has many benefits, especially for flies and maybe it will even help to maintain his joints. Definately a cheaper option for the dog than what the vet would reccommend! :)

Numpty question time :o

But where can I get it? can I just use the Tescos one? It's a lot cheaper then buying from a tackshop as they add about £3 on just because it says equine, even if its the same product

For joints and to help repell flies, never thought of using it on my dog! Will give it a go as she's on cortaflex and doesn't seem to have made a difference in the year she's been on it!

Human grade ACV is usually pasturised, the best ACV to feed to horses in unpasturised and at least 5% acidity - otherwise you are just paying for water.

If you have a local cider farm (down here in the west country we have a fair few) you could ask for kegs of it for nearly free!!!

I started feeding cider vinegar in December and B ate slower and slower, often leaving bits of chaff at the bottom. I stopped feeding afew days ago and he is now licking his bowl clean and eating speedily again...

I thought that ACV was ment to encourage fussy eaters, not put off pig horses??!!

I think I will offer it to him in another bucket, maybe with his carrot ration - spoilt pony!!

Some Cider Vinegars are nicer tasting than others, the NAF version smells like chip shop vinegar, the Natracare one I use smells more of apples... Might be why the horse above wasn't liking it added to its feed...

My gran used to give my cider vinegar and honey diluted in hot water as a drink when I was a child. I never suffered from colds or flu!
Been trying to find it over here in The Netherlands but don't know what they call it and its not just a case of a simple translation unfortunately.
