circulation cut off - tail dock

I hope somebody can help, im new to the forum but i have enjoyed reading posts and over the past year and found some great advice,
Im now hoping somebody could give me some advice
back in May a lady on my yard tied a badage on my mare a 7yr old cob x's beautiful thick tail in bandages without my consent, the bandage was put on i beleive early one evening and i noticed it the next morning when i arrived to feed my mare, i took it off i noticed alot of tail hair coming out and her dock was red, sore and obviously would have caused her alot of discomfort, i called the vet and she was treated. i was so upset that the lady who caused this and after being confronted and admiting to doing this fled our yard. anyway 5 months on, her skin on her dock is slowly going back to its dark colour what hair has grown is about 6 inches but now grey instead of black, and she still has alot of baldness in patches, is there ANYTHING that i could rub on her dock to help stimulate hairgrowth, im only just getting over the fact her tail may never be the same again, and it breaks my heart each and everytime i groom her tail or wash it, any advice would be very much appreciated.

try cornucrescine hoof rub (red and black/silver tub) I put that on my horses dock when a tail bandage rubbed his tail raw. Its grown back white bit there are no baldy bits.

Some people also swear by the megatek range as well. I havent used it so cant comment

So sorry about that, why do people infer? It's so annoying. I know one pony that has completely lost it's tail from a tail bandage, the girl fell at a show, mum and her went to the hospital. Dad with the best of hearts took the horse home and carefully put on his travel boots and tail bandage, just like his daughter did (he's not horsey). Got poped the horse in the stable and left it for the night.
Didn't remove the bandage the next day and by that evening it had fallen off, the whole lot! The girl was fine though, had to have her broken arm plated but soon back in the saddle.

Tried try this, have had good results on scrabble skin

Hi, pleased to hear the young girl was ok, and poor horse the whole tail, my word, i suppose i was lucky my mare didnt lose all hers, she such a brave girl, the vet said to me i was lucky i noticed it, a squirrel could have lived in it it was that thick before, and ive never have noticed.
The lady who did this works with peoples horses for a living, i think she should be sacked, Anyway thankyou for your reply and i will give scrabble skin a look on the web, anything is worth a try

Supplements that could help with his tail growth, such as linseed, garlic, brewer's yeast, vegetable oil and many others, but you should consult with your vet about adding to and changing his feed and do so gradually, over at least a month.

You should reduce the tail-washing to only when it's truly needed, ie. if it gets really grubby or pooey and before shows. I would say no more than once per month. Otherwise you will be washing out the natural oils from his skin that help keep the hairs in good condition. Use a specialist horse shampoo and make sure you rinse it all out thoroughly.

I would avoid using conditioning products and gloss sprays. They coat the hairs and stop the horse's natural coat conditioning oils from the skin from being absorbed, often making it more dry and brittle than it was to start with,

I agree, in fact I personally wouldn't put it on damaged skin. What does the Vet recommend?

I've heard a lot of similar stories about tail bandages including one horse who lost most of it's tail completely. So sorry and I've no advice what to put on.

Also, I don't think the white new hair growth will regain it's colour. I may be and hope I am, wrong but I think that is a measure of the damage caused to underlying skin layers.

You are very very lucky indeed that your horse is still OK and alive.

I remember when I was a kid in pony club that another girl put a tail bandage on her pony too tight; basically what happened was that the circulation to the tail was totally cut off, and the pony had to be PTS as it contracted gangrene. Her father was a MFH as well, so someone somewhere should have known.

Unfortunately this taught us all an awful lesson about tail bandages; and even now I see people from those pony club days who won't use them, full stop. Even now I won't use a tail bandage even for a short time, and for travelling use one of the wrap-around things.

Dunno what you can do to stimulate hair growth though? Sorry no ideas there.

re, the white hair; that's permanent. :-( One of mine has white hairs at the top of her tail, which was also the result of a tail bandage before we got her. We put mascara on it for shows & stuff x

Thanks everyone for their replies, My vet was great when she came to see my mare, i had to put on some antifungal/antibacterial cream for a week and bathed her dock in Malaseb shampoo, it wasnt long before it started to look more pleasent again, apart from the change of colour in skin and the baldness, i had a little feel this morning and can feel little hairs coming through, she loves me giving her a dock a little rub, she obviously appreciates it. I dont over clean her tail and brush it with combs anymore, i use my flick brush and give it a brush with that, so i dont take anymore hair out. its about half the thickness of what is should be, i have just heard about shapleys m.t.g oil, anybody heard of that?

Thanks for your reply, yes im coming to terms with the colour change, Aloe vera is worth ago, and easy to find, i get some of that today x

People at our yard have used Shapleys MTG - it's good for hair regrowth on the legs after mud fever.
But for manes and tails, Tailgator's Megatek is much better - less messy than MTG and although it's quite expensive you only need a tiny bit. i've got a big bottle that I bought a couple of years ago for manes that had been rubbed out by rugs and there's still some left.
My mare rubs her tail when in season and I use it on that, plus any rug rubs and for my hooligan of a 3yo when he cuts himself, gets bitten by another horse or similar!
It's very gentle so you can use it on newly healed skin. Good luck with your cob - what a horrible thing to have happened.

A mare belonging to a very good friend of mine's tail fell out in a matter of days. Literally fell out by the roots and even the vet was at a complete loss to explain way.

She bathed the dock with Malasab (vets instructions), then after a few days applied MTG. It is messy but the results are FANTASTIC. Within days she started to sprout new growth and now almost three months on she has a good couple of inches of growth.

The injury was in May therefore skin healing would be complete. Cornucrescene is excellent for hair regrowth and at this stage will certainly not hurt the skin.

Some of the hair may never grow back. If the skin that was damaged included the hair follicles they may be lost forever.

Ditto Cornucrescine, I used it many years ago on a horse that had a bald spot and it worked really well. Yes its for hoofs but hooves are made from Keratin which is the same thing hair is made from so it works equally well on actual hair as hair that is horn.

There is an american product called Farriers Formula which is meant to promote hoof growth, one of it's side effects is that is also promotes mane and tail growth. It certainly shouldn't hurt her. It's a general mineral and vitamin supplement. It's not cheap, but it could help.
