Has anyone claimed their insurance for this before? Just a few queries as to how it works.

As part of my boy’s treatment he will need a few trips over to the vet school for remedial trimming/shoeing by farrier. As I’m claiming my insurance for the whole period of treatment, remedial shoeing came up on the claims form. The way I have chosen for the insurance to be paid out is directly to the vet school. Can anyone tell me with regards to the farriery, do I need to pay up front on the day to the farrier or does it go on the vet bill like other treatments? Farrier is worth his weight in gold, I used to have him years ago before he retired and I paid him in cash, however he’s now semi retired and will only do vet school patients so you only get him if you’re referred to him.

Also, a fellow livery during a discussion about insurance said her insurance offered to pay for travel fees to vet school. How would this work? Only interested out of curiosity as I tow myself so not concerned about claiming for that and assume it’s more so aimed at people that need to hire and pay for transport, but just being nosey!

I have claimed travel for trips to the vet. Just give then start and end postcode and they give you price per mile.

Remedial shoeing you usually pay the farrier up front and he gives you a receipt which you send to the insurance company and they pay you back.

Okay thank you. Will maybe take some money over then, no idea how much 2 heartbars are! Or even if that’s what he’s planning on doing.

They usually pay the differnece in price. So if normal shoes are £80 and special shoes are £160 they will give you £80

My insurance paid the referral vets direct for specialist farrier. They paid the cost minus my normal shoeing costs which I was then invoiced for and paid to the vets. Think you need to check with the vets you are using on how they deal with things
