How hard can it be....?

Henry 'Talons' spaniel has rather long toe nails what with all the soft ground... he also has black nails. Is it very hard to clip these, or do you think if I asked the groomer to show me next time he goes I'd be able to keep them short between clips myself?

I never had to trim Jasper's in all the 14 years I owned him. He wore his away digging and scratching. Constantly scratching at the floor by the gate outside....whether you were with him or not! **rolls eyes**

Harvey, on the other hand, has very long claws already. He is having his second jab on Saturday and I'm planning on asking the vet if the should be trimmed yet...and hoping he'll offer to do it for me!

Bit panicky over dew claws as I would've sworn my life away that Harvey didn't have any....but alas he does. These are particularly long and look very susceptible to injury. Jasper either didn't have any or had had them removed when tiny. Dew claws are a new thing on me!

I trim Ozzie's but half of them are white, plus they mainly wear down on their own, it's just in the winter when it is cold and he get lazy that I have to keep an eye on them!

Probably best to get your groomer to should you if you are not sure, as if you go too far, they bleed like nothing else!

If you do try doing them yourself do make sure you have some pomangenate of potash (I think thats what it is) before you start, as this will stem the bleeding if you go too short accidentally. But beware, it stains everything purple with a vengance! And buy guillotine type clippers as they give better results than the other type which tend to crush the nail rather than do a clean cut?

I am pathetic and will never clip my own dogs nails, I never have done - I take them over to my mum and she does them

Islay has black nails so hers are challenging to do, so Mum always takes the nail off in little bits and tends to go for very slightly too long than risk getting it too short

Hope that helps

I would get a bit of guidance from groomer. Mine never need done as their runs are slabbed and they get a lot of work on roads and forestry tracks but I tried with my old bitch once - disastser!

the guillotine nail clippers do a good job. but buy some clip stop as if you go too far they bleed like mad! cayenne peppper also stops a bleed! but if unsure leave to vets or groomers! i have never had to trim my own dogs nails (bar a coupl of dew claws) as they wear them down digging.playing and running on the yard! perhaps some road work is in order?

I got a pedi paws for Christmas and been really pleased with it! Much less trauma than the usual wrestle to pin them down to clip them off, plus you cannot make 'em bleed.
