After a 3 day migraine and only getting 2 hours sleep last night, I found myself looking at this this morning:

Despite having a whole field to sleep in, he has slept in one corner tucked up against the fence, and then when getting up (as far as I can make out), has put his leg through the neighbouring fence, which just happens to be sheep netting, high tension wire and barbed wire. I have a feeling it was the barbed bit which has done the damage :(

He is so lucky not to have perforated the joint capsule, as he has actually taken chunks out of the fascia, but not gone any deeper (thank goodness).

The vet was a bit blasé, imho, didn't even really look at it, never mind have a prod and poke at it. Just deemed it too large and awkward to stitch so it'll have to be left open; cold hose it twice a day and cover it with aluspray to keep the flies off.

So he's had a big injection of anti inflammatories, and a depo antibiotic (which will need to be repeated on Thursday), and I'm left scratching my head a bit.

I'm sure the little b*gger is trying to make himself unsellable. He still has poorly feets in the front, and how he's going to end up with 1, if not 2 great ugly scars on his leg (to add to the other wire cut he had on this leg as a 2yo).

This is what happens when you have no vet bills for almost 12 years... they all start coming at once.

Oh no, that does look nasty. Hopefully he'll be on the mend soon. Sounds like the last thing you need! We've had no vets bills for two years and now we have had melanomas, a lameness workup (thankfully revealing nothing) and subclinical uveitis - I feel your pain! x

Well... I was just going to post a photo saying that despite how it looked, at week 3 it was almost healed when... he went and blummin did it again.

Many, many sweary words were said this morning as I got to the yard to find half my fencing down and electric rope strewn across the field.

I'm cursed, obviously!

Three electric fence stakes were sheared off at ground level and the electric tape which is the "real" fence was snapped and the handle spring completely stretched - as the tape is completely separate to my internal fencing I have no idea what went on there.

After a thorough going over, fortunately it is only B who has done himself a damage; T is perfectly OK.

I just don't know what to do now, that's twice in 3 weeks Blitz has come within a hairs breadth of a "life changing" injury; I shudder to think what would have happened If I'd used narrower gauge rope or tape. *I need the head banging against a wall emoticon here*

Is the electric attached to mains electricity?

It is, but it is a serial circuit, and my field is the last in the series, so the current is negligible. I can feel it if I hold the fence, but it isn't uncomfortable.

My internal fencing isn't part of the circuit and isn't live.

Yeah you need live mains fencing or a portable fencer - that's why they are going through I'm afraid ! electric fencing not properly charged is lethal

It would be worth getting a portable fencing unit to put on the internal fencing, they know they can get through and until you do something they will continue to do so, it is a simple and relatively cheap solution, certainly better than him being injured or worse.

He's not going through, over or under the fencing. I've had half the field fenced off that is less than 3ft high, and despite the lushness of the grass beyond neither of them have ever tried to get at it.

I have no idea what happened Monday night, though I think it was probably the same as before; is that he sleeps right in the corner of the field, and he's either got cast against the fence, or his leg has slipped when he's risen and gone through the fence.

Despite the "carnage" of the fencing yesterday morning, neither pony had even attempted to investigate the long grass that was then behind only one strand of rope 4ft off the ground (which T could get under with hardly dipping her head)

i`ve had that happen, rolling too close to the fence or lying down to close, overnight, fortunately not badly cut.

if you up the current it will help, but maintain it by putting water on the earth rod regularly.

Oo, nasty, little so and so definitely isn't in the mood to be sold in he. You must be feeling pretty drained with it all.

When I moved here there was post and rail with electric running inside and at the top, and in some places just electric between the posts as the rails had long gone. Even though it is mains powered and gives a decent zap the little mare still seemed to be getting herself in amongst it fairly regularly, and then when she came in with a nice tape burn gash round the top of a back leg I decided it all had to go. She's still getting the odd nick from clambering in the railings but at least it's not as bad as it was. Some horses really do take self harming to a whole new level.

Well, just to round off this thread...

After 8 weeks and 3 days, everything is almost completely healed :D

You can hardly see the lower cuts, there is just a small ruffle in the hair. I'll have to wait until next spring/summer to see if the new hair will grow in black or white, but it is a minor thing

I'm so pleased with how it has healed!
