Cleaning Breastplate Sheepskin

I have a lovely 5 point breastplate, however the sheepskin parts are starting to look dirty and aren't as fluffy as they used to be. I was wondering what I could use to clean the sheepskin - would horse whitening shampoo work with a bit of warm water?

i used a normal human shampoo and conditioner on mine and it came up nice and clean and fluffy

Warm water and conditioner should clean it and then I use a dog brush/rake to bring it up fluffy again

Is it real sheepskin? I have a shires one and we just chuck them in the washing machine! If they are though, does your washing machine have a wool setting?
