OK, I've not had a mare to clean before and in all honestly my mare was a witch today. I was very cautious and prepared to do it over a couple of days, so I didn't just dive in there, but she cow kicked for Wales.

So, any tips???? If I had an assistant then it would be easier.

Meant to add - I'm using baby wash and warm water with a soft cloth. Is that ok? How thorough do you need to be (used to a gelding you see!!!) Thanks.

When we do Fany's we use a baby wipe if it is not too bad or warm water with hibiscrub if dirty. However she is not a kicker, not sure how you would go about it. How about a long stick with the cloth on the end? :p

Sorry not much help. Seriously it may just be a case of getting her used to it.

ETA- I expect the baby wash will be fine. Fany likes hers dried afterwards, gets really sulky if not dried.

Well, not that I know of ( ! ) but she looks a bit crusty there and I assumed that as in my gelding, she would need the odd clean?

mine didn't mind it before, but now she hates it. I think i wasn't firm enough and tickled her once and now it is the only part of her body that she can't stand me touching. I usually use a baby wipe and blow on it to warm it and do it quickly before she notices. Or if she is sedated for any reason.
A lot of people reckon that you don't need to do it anyway. Also some people have never heard of it being done and have never tried to clean there.

We started when Fany had mastitis (sp) and we've just continued. Also if she ever needs examining she is used to being touched there, so no problems with legs coming out.
Not so keen on doing Captain's boys bits, he really does not like it.

Hmm, I have never cleaned a mare's teats unless she has had mastitis but that it not to say I am right.

However I would sugggest that as your mare is obviously not keen on you doing it, it might be as well to leave alone. Certainly not worth risking a kick

True, a kick isn't good! I guess I thought that my gelding (who does get pretty dirty in that private area) actually needs it doing and so perhaps she must too.

Hiya I clean my mare as part of her grooming routine as she has a build of black grease and dirt which can't be comfy. I started getting her used to it by running the flat of my hand down the inside of her stifle firmly enough that it didn't tickle but gentle enough so not to scare her when she moved I gave her a 'no' and kept my hand in place gradually just building up to wiping the teats with a warm sponge. I appreciate your mare is probably bit more ticklish but I have used the same process with others in my care in can be useful to face the tail and put your free hand on the mares quarters so as they try to kick give them a firm push on the rump and a no and try and keep your hand underneath telling her she's good a little treat might help too.

i don't clean mine, never have. the waxy substance on and around there teats protects them, it keeps the skin moist while stopping water damaging the skin.

Can't offer any help as mine adores having hers done - nothing more embarassing than being bent double and rummaging around in your horse's boobs while they grunt and wiggle their lip in pleasure. :o

I do it regularly because she gets greasy, crusty black... stuff up inbetween them and if I let it build up it actually seems to make the skin sore.

Edit: Would she let you squirt a glug of baby oil up there? It might loosen all the crusty bits up at least.
