What solution do you use that is strong enough to get rid of the stains but doesn't leave an awful smell for hours afterwards?

As above - Jeyes fluid is very good. I now use Virodene which is an iodene based antiviral cleaning solution.

That sound familiar, pink powder that comes in a yellow "tub"? We used to use it to clean out the dog kennels at the animal shelter where I used to work. Does the job but someone told me it's been banned in some countries cos it's caustic...

It's a pink powder but we can only get it in packets from the vet or a really good tack shop. Very good though.
