Cleveland Bays - who has them ?

My new lad is a 5 year old CB/TB cross. Still only a baby with a bit of growing/filling out still left to do. Very friendly but quite spooky/not sure of himself with anything new. His papers say he's 3/4 TB and only 1/4 CB but size and looks wise he's definately taken after the CB side.

Still early days yet, we're just getting to know each other.

Lincoln University have a small stud of them. The stallion, Prince (Lindon Principal) was the first foal they bred and is in the ridden at the Royal this year, having previously won best 2 year old there. Has a wonderful temperament and lives on the yard with the rest of the horses, handled by the students. Have just sold the young stallion, Spider (can't remember his registered name).

Had two pure bred fillies this year, within the last two or three weeks. They now have 3 generations Dorothy, who had a foal about 3 weeks ago (Jemima, huge) and Hope (Lindon Minerva) who is out of Dorothy who had the other filly a few days ago (Faith, not so huge).

They do polarise people. Those that love them are passionate, others wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. They get a bad press and are actually quite versatile, easy to do and scrub up well for shows! There needs to be more of them and more of them ridden and seen to be doing things rather than just being a rare breed which you.......breed.

I did once suggest tongue in cheek but with a straight face that the breed would be more popular if it came in different colours and had they ever thought of trying to breed a coloured CB, coloureds being very popular? There was a silence for a few minutes before they twigged I was not serious. But it's a thought...!

Well, sounds like my boy got those bits from his CB side then!!! Just got home from yard where he has had me running round in circles - he's the biggest 'Harry Houdini' (sp!) on the yard!!! And he is also bare foot so I turn my back and he tippy toes off behind me without me hearing a thing!! Tonight he managed to undo a springy clip on his door chain and as someone else's farrier came in he made a beeline for his van to 'investgate' and probaby see if there was anything in there to eat!!! Farrier decided he was Monty Roberts and tried herding him back in to his stable, horsey NOT impressed!! One 'Oi you' from me and he legged it straight back in!!!

I have a CB x
He has outstanding feet, is a very good doer and has been on dust all summer, he is very bright but also very stubborn. Jimmy has never been sick or sorry for himself and we have had him from his breeders. He is very independent yet hates not having company. He has also never had a xc penalty. Jimmy has no signs of sun bleaching in his fab coat while my other horse is bloody dun!

My lad is a CB.
Dam : Oaten Windjammer
Sire : Southbrook Spellbound

Age : 4
Height : 17.3

No White

An absolute pleasure to own, a real character with a sense of
humour.

Unspookable, Single minded and a favourite with everyone on the yard.

Thanks to Mrs Watson for selling him to me.

Now in a years time if you want to loan him out for a year, there is a loving home available (when I put Donkey in foal - to a CB of course!!!!!!!!!)

My friend has just recently lost her mare, in her mid 20s. She had no papers but everyone was sure she was Cleveland Bay. She had an evil temperament - but had had a horrible past, her owner knew for a fact that she had had an electric cattle prod used on her! However, she was the most incredible performance horse, won everything at riding club level show jumping , and represented club in teams show jumping and hunter trials many, many times. She was pts earlier this year with colic, something that she had always had problems with, also had liver damage. From knowing her, and ignoring her temperament, I would certainly be a fan of Cleveland Bays.

I have a part bred Cleveland Bay x Arab. His Great Grandsire is Mulgrave Supreme, who the queens horse I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong there.

He truly is a fantastic horse. As someone else mentioned, he has great feet and is an extremely good doer. He too can be quite spooky, don't know which side he gets that from.

He loves x country and is a very good mover, we do have the odd problem with show jumping although we got a double clear last weekend British Novice on only his second affiliated show so he's not that bad.

I wouldn't hesitate to have another based on what I have now, although I might just have lucky.

I would but for two things -my camera is jamming and takes pictures over other pictures, lot of good that is and I don't have the first idea how to put pictures on here, being useless at technology. Will think on it.

Mulgrave Supreme did belong to the Queen I believe. Spellbound took the King George last year, but Prince won over him in the ridden class -Spellbound was reserve. Got his own back this year as he came second in the ridden at KG and Prince was third! I think Spellbound's owners are going to concentrate more on riding him than showing as such now, which is good.

Time to go digital girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mulgrave is also Donkey's great great grandfather - it was a horse sired by him that gave me my passion for the breed when I was 13.

My original CB x had Mulgrave Supreme as his grand-dam and he was fab. He was 1/4 CB and 3/4 TB and I bought him to novice event and ended up at Badminton! He's now 21 and my OH field masters on him. The two I have now are both 1/8 CB and we also have a pure CB 3yr old in the field who's *whispers* liver chestnut, and will be a hunter in a couple of years time.

So yes, I am a fan and I think they get a really bad press sometimes which is a shame. Thank God for people like SSM who go out of their way to extol their virtues!

I own a mare who I was told is CB x and apparently her father was something like Rock Hill Big Ben. I bought her before passports were needed so don't really have any idea of her true breeding. Her name is Norton Sunrise and apparently she had a foal (or it could be her mother) some time ago who was called Norton Peaches and Cream. Must admit she is a nice sort but can be spooky. She is dun and also I have bred from her and she produces duns.
I would love to know more but don't know where to start without any paperwork.
