My pony has been demonstrating his genius IQ lately - thought I would share...

I keep him in a field up the road and have no proper storage facilities. So I have been keeping his haylage (EquineH bagged haylage), feed and grooming kit in a small corner of the field by the gate - everything else is at home. Using large branches I have built a small barricade around this corner to keep him out.

Came up the other day to discover that he had somehow dragged a full unopened bale of Equine M over the baricade, into the middle of the field, opened it carefully and was happily tucking into it. Baring in mind these bags are vacuum wrapped in about 6 layers of plastic and extremely heavy (I have to get my OH to move them) I cannot imagine how he managed it!!!!!

Having moved the bales of haylage to just outside the gate (not very secure but ATM no other option) I came up the yesterday to find that he had carefully dragged out his plastic feed bin, removed the lid (which was one of those clip on ones), eaten all the feed out of it, opened and consumed a 'sample feed' bag from the bottom of the bin and attempted to open his tub of joint supplement.

He then sulked mightily when I didn't conjure up a feed for him in his bucket. I had noticed him watching me carefully when I prepared his feed and opened his haylage for a couple of days - clearly he was coming up with his genius plan all along and just working out where everything was kept.

I have decided that ponies are just FAR too smart for me, maybe I should stick to horses

Pleas share your clever pony stories here.

Oh dear, that's not good! Could you not buy one of those big plastic storage trunks from b&q or wherever to keep him out? (not sure if they would be big enough??)

Clever ponies are a pain. I went up to the yard the other day to find Osc had opened the 'horse-proof' field gate and let him and his girlfriend out onto the yard. Which was 3 inches of sheet ice.

I sometimes leave my lami ponies loose on our enclosed concrete yard, so they are not shut up for hours in the summer. The haybarn has a big gate which had dropped slightly over the years, so the handle only just caught it shut. The Newfie found he could open it so we put a plastic ex-window handle on, so now you have to push it a quarter turn to the right.

The Newfie soon learnt how to open it by pushing it up with his nose, so he let himself and his little fat friends in, and they pulled apart several bales and generally piddled and poo'ed in there (in the space of about an hour).

So I attached a dog lead (all I had to hand at the time!) to the gate and tied it up. I then watched to see - he opened the handle, and found the gate wouldn't move more than a few centrimetres. Not to be defeated, he then kept nudging it and nudging it, so the knot on the rope got tighter until eventually he got it open enough to get his muzzle in, then he just pushed until the clip (not a big one) gave way. Very pleased with himself he was too, until I appeared from behind the stable

Needless to say I don't leave him unattended on the yard anymore!

LOL - naughty pony - Newfies are very clever and they don't give up do they? I think this is the thing with mine, he is very very persistant when he has figured out food in the reward!
