My dog can and does chase after thrown balls - when she is in the right mood. She does bring it back, drops and can ask for more goes... but some days she'd rather be 'sniffing out the bunnies'.. I've never used treats to teach her anything, but as she isn't known for her brains, ''big tricks'' are way out of her league!!
When we were with the Springer pup at the weekend, who is being trained using treats, my dog very quickly adopted the 'stay, wait, not going to get ANY ball' stance - because the pups owner had treats in his pocket! She got given the odd treat, because she was waiting - and she never did anything. And for love nor money we couldn't get her to chase the ball... where the pocket of treats went, she was there!
Meanwhile, the pup was doing really well, and showing mine how to do it!
Lazy cheeky mutt!
