Just been reading a really interesting article in your horse mag by Sarah Fisher, would like to try it with our new boy, really just to build up our bond.

Has anyone used it for their horse for this reason? He is very very food motivated but also on a diet so what treats could I use as rewards? Also I'm worried it may make him nippy as he is a little already although improving now we've got him.

I read the same article and thought I would give it a go.... but my girl is so clever she did it once got a treat.... then is frantically tapping the lid with her nose none stop and touching my nose for more lol (I previously taught her this for a treat oops!)

A very good place to start is to read Alexandra Kurland's books and watch her DVDs. These explain the advantages and the pitfalls very very well.

Second Alex Kurlands books especially 'Clicker Training for your horse'. I personally haven't used it much or for building my relationship but I know many people find it helps hugely with their relationship with their horse.

You can use very healthy treats like tiny bits of carrot, or pony nuts as long as you reduce his hard feed ration accordingly.

Most trainers start with a 'leave it'' exercise to make sure there are is no grabbing or lunging for the treats.

Enjoy!
