Hey everyone,

Today, I was schooling and everytime in trot it was like Gypsys fetlocks were clicking. Well to me is sounded like the fetlock and to Ashleigh it sounded like her hock. Shes not lame, not favouring any of the legs, and it was just in trot. Shes never clicky so its a bit odd.

Shes kept out 24/7 aswell. Has anyone had any experiences with clickyness? Ashleigh on here, her Ronnie also has clicky hips?

Today was the first time in quite a while I have schooled Gypsy though, could this be a reason? :S any advice? Shes not in pain or anything and when I picked her hooves out she didnt mind picked it up as normal etc. Shes 10 aswell if this is any help.

Is it worth trying her on a supplement or putting more oil in her hard feed may help?

:D Thank you in advance!! xx

We have lots of 'clicky' horses at our yard - two geldings (20 and 27yrs) and two mares (18 and 20 yrs). Not sure if the younger horses do it, I tend to ride in the school or hack out with the other 'oldies' :)

None of them are in any discomfort and the clicking tends to be in walk rather than trot.

We thought it was joints and my girl is on Premierflex HA plus veg oil added to her hard feed. However, according to "Equine Fitness - Jec Aristotle Ballou" p54:

"Almost evey equestrian at some point has noticed a subtle clicking noise coming from the back end of her horse while riding or longeing or even leading. Some worry that it might be arthritis or indicate that the horse needs a joint supplement. The truth is that the noise isn't always coming from the joint and it's rarely reason for major concern. Sometimes the noise is in the joint - hip, fetlock, knee - and it's similar to when human knees occasionally crack when we stand up. An air bubble becomes trapped in the joint capsule and when it squeezes out, it makes a cracking or popping noise. More commonly, though, the noise is caused by tendons or ligaments, typically by joint ligaments. These thick ligaments are like elastic bands that hold joint together while allowing them to move. A clicking noise often happens when one of these ligaments flicks over the bone to a new position as the joint moves."
