Had to make my first awful phone call to say a dog got hurt today. He's a somewhat mental pointer x lab who isn't allowed off lead but he has so much pent up energy I often put him on a long line so he can chase a ball about and burn up some energy, today I threw the ball a bit far and he whipped the lead out of my hand to chase the ball down the bank into the stream, came out the wrong side and jumped back over from bank to bank and is now limping badly on his back leg. Owner worried but not angry, I feel terrible...

Thanks, just wish I'd chosen a lead walk today... Obviously I've set I'll pay any vet bills if it's still bad this evening and owner takes him to vet, there were points on the short walk home where he wasn't weight bearing at all so worried it's something serious.

Your insurance should cover vets bills, I’d call them before you start paying yourself in case it does run up large bills, ie xrays and so forth.
It’s just one of those things when you’re a dog walker. Thankfully it hasn’t happened to me yet but I dread the day it does, and I even know which bloody dog it’s likely to be too ?

Yep my insurance covers vet bills so will wait on update when owner gets home then call them, don't want him to have to wait for money so may pay it then wait on my insurance to pay me back, hopefully it was something painful at the time but that has worn off after half hour and we are both worrying over nothing.

What a nightmare. I always imagine the responsibility of walking other people's dogs must weigh heavily, especially when accidents happen. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious (like cruciate ligament :().

This is why I hate flexi’s amongst other reasons. Don’t be hard on yourself, it’s one of many hazards whilst walking other people’s dogs! ?

Hopefully it will be, our Labrador can be a right drama queen when it suits him ?

Ah now this is why I know I’m a dog owner from hell lol - I could never let anyone walk my dogs in case this sort of thing happened because I know I’d go mad (blushes...!!!!)

I totally and absolutely realise it can happen in an instant and is JUST as likely to happen with me walking them as someone else, it is completely irrational ? I’m too protective I suppose....

Glad the dog is ok OP, I swear they just live to make us worried ??

It was an accident they happen but I bet you are so relieved to hear he’s better .
its nice that it was a sensible client who did not go off on one at you .
