Hey, got a yearling Shetland two weeks ago, he’s not Ben cared for much, Iv been getting a lot of hair out of him. Wondering could I clip him, but go with his hair rather than shaving up and taking all his coat. He’s all patchy but wanting to take him to local show in two weeks

If you clip him and take him to a show you’re very likely to be placed down the line. Clipping of youngsters is frowned upon unless for welfare reasons. Just because his summer coat hasn’t come through isn’t a welfare reason! Maybe consider bathing him and then a good groom with decent brushes.

I would get one of those curvy shedding blades, or maybe a coat rake - whatever you think will work for his coat - then some decent podcasts and a set of overalls, and set to! If you do twenty minutes every day for the next ten days you should get loads out. I think if you do clip it will look a bit weird and probably be counterproductive. And ditto what others have said, a bath with shampoo and warm water to loosen up the remaining lumps of winter coat should help.

I would suggest that taking a pair of clippers to this pony seems very unfair.

You acknowledge he has had a bad start and you have only had him 2 weeks.

Taking clippers to him and then taking him showing is really not within his best interests.
