Clipped Horse but still getting hot

I clipped my horse last night - gave him a highish Chaser clip, but took all his neck off as he is hogged and half face - rode him and he was still sweating quite badly where he was not clipped - ie under saddle and bum - but don't know whether to take more off but what clip to give him? - prefer not to take his bum off as he is quite spooky and heard this can make them worse - do I just make it into a high blanket clip?
 
I had the same I did a high trace on my mare but after 2 weeks I was pulling my hair out having to cope with a sweaty horse!! So on wednesday I took the lot off! (except saddle circle and legs!) Now I ride her and by the time I'm warmed down she's dried off!! So no sweaty horse to cope with!! It all really depends on what you can offer to compensate for the removal of the coat, if you've lots of rugs and horse is being stabled at night and in really bad weather then clip it off!! Never heard of any spookiness but I could imagine for a very sensitive skinned horse if it was subjected to icy cold winds the day of the clip when it wasn't used to it, for it to be a little on its' toes????? But only for that first day???
 
I have fully clipped in the past - but he has to live out this year too - so did not want to find him frozen to spot on very cold nights - although I do have rugs and under rugs and he does have access to a field shelter - might just finish him off later and take the lot off!!
 
mine is fully clipped and is getting really hot with the warm weather, boils with a no stuffing sheet on but reluctant to put nothing at all on him.
 
I would not recommend doing a full clip on a horse who is wintering out, sorry....... some people on here might, but I feel that it's unfair to take his natural winter protection away and then leave him to cope with the elements, I understand that you have the rugs, but a high wind can whip under a rug and cause a chill if not natural coat to defend it. Having a field shelter is excellent, IF the horse uses it!!!

Why not allow him to sweat and use a thermatex/or similar under your turnout to allow him to dry off out in the field, and supply him with electrolytes to replace the natural salts lost through sweating????
 
clipping the quarter off CAN make sharp horses worse on those cold days!

some horses so just seem to get hot and sweaty- as long as he has plenty of rugs and forage he should be fine out fully clipped.
 
Yep the old saying "someones felt the wind on their bum this morning" I imagine comes from this and not trumping ! A blanket might be best keep the tummy cooler - It is really warm atm for October !
 
Yes good idea Competitiondiva - however I think I will just turn his clip into a blanket and see how he goes. Its a little extra off but he still has some protection I suppose. He does get quite warm - hopefully by Christmas or early 2010 I might have a stable!
 
I don't believe it makes a horse more spooky clipping their quarters, I think its purely because it can make them colder (obviously) so this itself makes them a bit sharper. I remedy this by sticking on a quarter sheet on the coldest days.

My horse is the same and has I think the same clip. I would leave him as he is, the weather is freaky at the mo and has got to change soon and you will then be glad you didnt take it all off.
My horse is clipped and has been too hot in a LW turnout, they reckon we will have wind and rain this weekend so hopefully the sweating will stop.
 
mine lives out with a shelter and has had a full clip - she gets very hot otherwise - she is fine and its so mild at moment anyway - when it does get colder she just has thicker rugs and has plenty hay to keep her warm.
