Also how do you know when they need it?

I've only gotten two clips out of mine?! And on the last horse it was leaving a few mm of hair instead of being right down to skin. Very hairy horses though.

How often do you have your sharpened? How many clips do you expect them to do?

Have no i dea , was going to do mine for the first time last weekend and my brand spanking new blades were blunt ! Grrrr had to borrow some of a friend to attempt to tidy up the hackjob

I usually get 8-10 first time clips out of a set of Lister Blades. Then about 15-18 re-clips once sharpened again. I am clipping TB's though and they don't have the thickest of coats.

I usually swop for a fresh set of blades when they start to leave little lines.

So mine shouldn't be blunt?!! I'll try clip the next horse with these blades and change if I need too. Be may be a little wet anyway.

The saleswoman told me to have them sharpened between clips!!! Does that sound right to anyone?

They are lister libertys.

Littlescallywag mine were brand new blades on brand new clippers!

EKW for first time clipping on those blades I would hope to get 3 or 4 hairies

I would expect to get at least 4-5 clips between sharpening, and that hairies doing all the feather and hogging.

I always have a spare set sharp though, hate them going blunt half way through a clip.

I get about 10 clips (hairy cobs!) out of brand new blades and approx 5 out of sharpened ones. Luckily I only clip a few times in the winter so I now simply keeps two sharpened blades for the winter and have them redone after the season ready for next year.

Get about 2-3 full clips from my blades then resharpen.

I have 4 sets so when two are away being sharpened I can still clip.

Does depend on the horse coats though
