My clippers (Heiniger Handy) came with a set of standard blades - are fine blades better for horses? Will I get a better clip that will last longer with fine blades, or will my tram lines be more likely to show up?!

I've been debating investing in some fine blades for a while but never been sure whether it is worth it.

I have a Heinger Handy clipper and I have the fine blades. They work well on a horse with little coat, like a fine skinned warmblood but they wouldn't get through a cobs coat. Tram lines are normally down to operator skill than how effective blades are or what type of blade you use. If you use too much pressure whilst clipping or you don't overlap your strokes you will get the horrible tram line effect!

If you have a 'pattern' like a trace clip for example if you run the clippers 90 degrees to the line you will make a better clip.

Thanks applecart - I suspected my tram lines were more down to the operator (me!!) than anything else as they aren't always there and I think my clipping technique is getting better slowly... :D

Thinking about it, I probably do tend to use a bit too much pressure. Horse has fairly fine hair but quite a lot of it so I might do better sticking with the medium, though maybe fine blades would do for second clip...
