I want to clip my Pony during the summer as she has Ems and as a result carries a heavier coat than normal. Its not curly as with cushings just longer than normal.

I don't want to clip as short as a normal clip and have been using Oster A5's with a 7f blade. However they are overheating and don't cut proparly. Sadly the more powerful larger clippers don't seem to come with great blade options.

I've been looking at the Andis 2 speed which get better reviews.

Any suggestions ?

Hi,

Oster A5's and Andis AGC 2 speeds are both dog clippers and are not suitable for clipping horses. They are fine for trimming but to expect them to clip without overheating is asking a bit much.

That said, comparing the two is straight forward enough. The Oster has a universal motor in it and draws 45w. The bearrings that the motor sits in are solid brass and do not reduce friction as much as a steel ball bearing. The parts are quite cheap and the clipper is a real work horse. The two main faults are the Bakelite cases used on some batches and the rubber cable always breaks where it exits the grommet.

The Andis has a permanent magnet motor that draws 35w. As no power is required to turn the field coil into a magnet all of this power is used by the motor, thus is smaller and lighter for the same amount, if not more power output. The bearrings are both steel ball bearrings making them quiet and much more reliable. The drawback of the Andis is that it is 'highly strung' it is highly refined but it is prone to going bang at the first sight of oil. If you insist on using any clipper like these two you will need to be using lots of oil regularly and that is a big no-no with the Andis. Always leads to expensive repairs, if not making them a write off.

The main problem with using any clipper that uses the A5 style blades is that the blades just aren't up to much. They will get hot and blunt quickly when used to clip a horse. You need so much patience as well. You need something much more robust. You say you are using a 7F to clip. That leaves 3.2mm. Wolseley A6 blades, Heineger coarse blades and Hauptner standard blades all leave between 3 & 4mm.

If you would like to know more about horse clippers I can continue but i won't bore you unnecessarily at this point!

Hope that helps anyway!

Some of the older Lister and Wolseley models are better made than the modern ones (now made in China) and turn up regularly on ebay.

I still have my Lister Pedigree set my aunty bought me when I was a kid (1970s). It's a little worn and rattles a bit but its still going strong!

Hi, i've only just seen this and bought the Andis two speed. They did the job a treat. I need the A5 blades as the A2 blades just don't have the options I want. I want to clip the horse to make it look like its got a summer coat in summer not look like its had a winter clip.

I'm going to email liveryman as I believe they are missing a trick with the a2 blades. Lots of horses now have cushings and as a result have thicker coats than they should. I believe most people would prefer the look of a summer coat length clip to a short winter one.

I've tried the coarse a2 blades but they were useless.

I have supplied several customers with A6 Wolseley/Liveryman blades to use on horses with cushings. The customers have been very happy and they have managed to get more than one clip from their blades. I would echo shear ease, in that the Oster and Andis are more "dog clippers" than horse. Heinegar are very good as a recommendation, with a good selection of blades, their coarse blades are also good for cushings. Any further info,PM me as admin delete me because I work in the trade. They appear to be happy to allow people who sell **** to promote their wares, so remember "Caveat emptor" when purchasing. There are lots more crappy Chinese imports on the market this year with blades made from recycled T34 tanks, so be advised. It may have a fancy name, but there is a good chance it will be **** if under £200 quid....
