Hi all,

Hope everyone is well!

Please can I pick your brains on clippers?

Just to do my own horse, a 16.2 Irish sports horse. Would ideally like to spend under £200. Need something I can clip small feathers with too.

Would buying second hand be recommended? Have found some Wolseley swift clippers with brand new blades for £150.

Your opinions gratefully received as always
Thanks guys!

Highly recommend Masterclip Rangers. I’ve had mine about two years and they get through mini Shetland yak style coats with ease. Masterclip customer service is great and replacement blades are about £24 and sent out very quickly.

Do you want mains or battery clippers? I am a big fan of Listers and bought a second hand pair of Lister Laser about 14 years ago and they are still going strong. I get the serviced most years and they probably do about 18 full clips a season.

Thanks so much for your replies guys! Am looking at getting some today ?

Prince has had a rough time lately - not been himself so I had him scoped for ulcers and he has them, so is just ending a course of gastro guard. He seems so much happier! Coat shining like conker! He’s perky and alert! Just before I noticed he wasn’t himself (suddenly ears back when I picked up the saddle pad!) he had been doing brilliantly! Lots of lunging and walks out alone which he seemed to enjoy. I was just getting to the point when I was finally going to get back on and it was that that day - as I went to tack him up - that I noticed he didn’t seem himself ?

Last week he had a mild colic so the vet came again and has taken bloods to test kidneys, liver etc.. as she noticed he still has papilloma warts on his nose (they should be dropping off soon as he’s had them for 5 months) and was surprised a horse of his age would have them. His breathing was fast too. She is doing a cushings test. I should have the results back today.

He seems back to his normal chirpy self today though.

It feels quite overwhelming sometimes as in the short time I’ve had him he has had hives, mud fever, choke, conjunctivitis, ulcers, mild colic and who knows what next! But I’ve learnt so so much along the way - it’s been the sharpest learning curve of my life!

I’ve switched him from dried grass and soaked grass nuts to a pink mash, to help his hind gut. He has equilibra 500 balancer to boost his immune system.

Once I have the blood results and he gets the all clear from the vet I will start lunging again and going for our walks together.

I still have the memory of his big rear in my mind, but looking back at old photos from June he looks like a different horse - so thin and poor. It’s no wonder he was agitated and fed up. It’s actually been the hugest privilege and most rewarding experience to make him well again. Sometimes I just climb up on top of my hay and watch him grazing with his friends in the field and I feel a happy glow ?

Keira, I really feel for you and your lovely boy as you have been through so much already. For me what still stands out is that he is so very lucky to have found you. Your care and attention to him is exemplary. He is looking so well and that is an absolute credit to your care.

That’s so kind thank you ? It really does feel like it’s been a long old slog, but I know he’s happy and safe now so that means everything. X
