My clippers gave up the will to live the other day when I was half way through a clip (with an event the next day - panic!!)

I have taken them into the menders to check what it wrong with them and it is the worst outcome - the motor needs replacing at a cost of £219.00

They are/were Wolseley Harriers about 6 years old - A new set is approx £299.00

Would you:

A/ Pay the £219.00 to get them fixed (I presume there will be a years guarantee on the motor)
or
B/ Buy a new set, the cheapest/best heavy duty make I can find is a Hauptner Premier 3000c set that have good reviews at £254.00

I just can't decide what to do ....

Buy new

Obviously I say this because I love to shop, but also at 6yrs old (and with enough wear to have exhausted the motor) other parts of your harriers may start going wrong too- like the blade bed loosening, or the minor mechanisms that actually allow the blades to cut breaking

I do not think it is worth the risk (or the cost) fixing them IMO ...shop, shop, shop

Buy a new pair. if the repair cost was £100, it might be worth repairing them. Make sure that the new clippers can use the blades you had for the Wolseley.

New kit is generally lighter and more efficient than older stuff.

I have two pairs of Hauptner 2000 and have had them for 9 years and they clip really well and I like them because you can get the fine (vetinerary) blades for them which clip really really close, my clippers do approximately 20 clips per year, mine and liveries and I have had them service twice in 9 years and the blades sharpened once a year. I brought my second pair from FarmcareUK a few years ago and they were the cheapest around and I get my blades from Ritchey UK in Yorkshire who also service my clippers and sharpen my blades, totally love my Hauptners, don't know about the 3000c but imagine that they are an upgrade to the clippers I have.

I think you are right - I need to shop!

Thanks for the replies on the Hauptner, I have just found out they do not take the A2 blades that the Wolseleys take which is a shame as I have 3 sets of blades.

But, I think it is worth changing brands as these clippers have great reviews and are a good price.

Thank you for the Farmcare link - I'm off to shop, shop, shop

Good luck, I would think if you put your old blades on Ebay they will sell really quickly in the present climate.

Nick at farmcare is really helpful, the Hauptners are easy to adjust and so long as you oil and keep blades clean when clipping do not heat up as quick as many other makes.

I think I may be watching your Wolseleys on Ebay - lol!

I'm worried that if I buy 2nd hand clippers (for about £150.00) I won't have a guarantee - therefore if they break I am losing out again, I am thinking that new ones would be worth the extra £100 or so for peace of mind ...

I bought my wolseley harrier clippers second hand 13 years ago and they are still (touch wood!!) going strong, I would only buy wolseley again, I have them serviced every year to keep them running smoothly and sharpen the blades regularly so not to put too much strain on the motor.

Personally I wouldn't pay anything of the sort to repair them when you can buy a brand new pair for not much more!!

I have had my Lister's for several years and I swear by them. My instructor has a pair of Lister's that she has had for nearly 20 years and still uses them!

They are a great brand, I haven't had any other experience with another make xx
