Clippers - Lister Neon or Liveryman Arena???

Looking to buy my own clippers (2nd hand) - have been clipping for years with borrowed sets, but it's about time I invested!
I'll be clipping at least 3 horses all winter, including one with quite hairy legs - anyone have any opinions on the two models above?!
Very limited budget hence looking at the older second hand models.
 
Be careful buying clippers second hand. The amount of people we have that bring them in to us at work saying they got them second hand and half way through a clip they just gave up. Turns out they often have internal damage like water damage, loose connections etc and that is the reason people are getting rid of them!
If you are going to get some second hand make sure they buy them from someone reputable or you know who you are getting them from and trust they are not just trying to offload their crappy clippers on you.
 
Have had my Lister Neons for some years - used for clipping and occasionally feathers, and hogging every four weeks. Did have to send them away last year for a revamp of some part of the motor but came back fine and still going.....
 
Lister Neons, were the forerunner to the Lister Star, when they changed the machine to the Star, they had made some modifications to the head and the body screws. Whilst Neons and Stars were good machines for a price, like many modern smaller machines they have a drawback. When they go wrong,it is expensive. Often they will just stop and the reset will have tripped. This is often caused by a motor/pcb fault, which with labour and parts, tends to be uneconomic. Please note, as far as my experience goes, there is no test,or advance warning of failure. They literally work ok, then "poof" dead!! The Arena is also an old machine and has had several incarnations, the early ones with the grey button on top, were German produced and reliable, likewise the Arena Plus with the slide out filter and button on the side. The Arena Blue IMHO was a lemon, ran hot and was not a good investment. But again, as with all second hand machines,you could be buying a world of hurt. If you pick up something running ok for £50,then maybe a gamble worth taking, but when spending £100 to £150, its a big gamble. I would suggest buying a new Star, and take out Listers extended warrranty,if you can stretch to it. Good luck.
