Looking to my first set of clippers and some reasonably priced ones on Ebay however, is there any that I should steer well clear of?

Most that aren't branded! A lot won't have been safety tested. However if you're looking for fairly cheap I can recommended Master clip

I have a set of masterclip too and they are fab! Practically half the price of a more popular brand but just as good IMO
